Out for today's walk in the woods, I was drawn to a sunny ledge half way up a large rock outcropping. A few technical moves and I pulled into a seated position on the ledge, only to notice that I was not alone.

These two Western Terrestrial Garter Snakes were outstretched in rivulets of water warmed by the sun and rock. As we were all clearly there for the same reason, we quickly reached an amicable agreement and sat in silence together for some 20 minutes or so.

Reilly, perhaps you are thinking of the Western European Celestial Garter snakes, which have been know to fly long distances with coconuts duct taped to their undersides.

If you look hard enough, you can probably find several in this pic.

A little standoff in central Nevada yesterday. After I quietly said: "Fuk the Bundys," he decided to graze elsewhere.

Ogwyn George

The nine RAF airmen who lost their lives that day, 9 April 1940, when the RAF Sunderland Flying Boat L2167 from 210 Squadron was shot down, were the first Allied servicemen to lose their lives in the defense of Norway. They are remembered with a special ceremony each year at their graves in the Sylling churchyard, north east of Oslo. There was one survivor – Welshman Ogwyn George, the radio operator – who fell 3,000 feet (900 m) without a parachute, hitting trees and landing in unusually deep snow. He was discovered and rescued by Norwegian Johan Bråthen.

The remains of Sunderland L2167

In 1950 the Norwegian Erling K Strangebye was living at an American hotel in Bremen. He worked as an escort officer for an international organisation for placing the many uprooted people.
One day he went into the hotel’s antique shop his eyes caught 12 small silver cups with the Luftwaffe emblem on them.

All had the name “Leutnant Lent” on them with a date, place and aircraft type.
What he had found was 12 of around 60 small silver cups that Leutnant Lent had received from the luftwaffe, one for each shootdown up until 1943.
Three cups refered to shootdowns in Norway, one of them had “Leutnant Lent Fornebu 9.4.1940 Sunderland” this was when Leutnant Lent shot down the british flying-boat.

Strangebye bought the cup for $50. In 1967 he finally moved back to Norway with the cup.
In April 1972 Ogwyn George (the survivor of the Sunderland) came to Norway to take part in a TV program hosted by Erik Bye. Two days later he went to the Hotel Continental in Oslo and gave Leutenant Lent’s Sunderland cup as a gift to Mr George.
