Pmac, that pic of the skateboarders reminds me of a time I was headed into Aspen over Independence Pass @ about 10:00pm. We saw these weird lights up ahead weaving back and forth across the road. When we finally got to the lights it was 2 guys boarding down the pass (like your pic), each with partially empty 6 packs in their arms. We stopped to talk to them and it was obvious that there were other chemicals coursing through their veins, we continued on just shaking our heads...ahhh, Aspen in the 70's.

Never trusted electronic navigation so I carry a sextant and the old skool charts in various forms on long long passages. Never know when they may come in handy.

McHale,
Could it be cochineal? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochineal

The lichen it's on looks like Umbillicaria, ...if that helps.

I remember, when I was a kid, seeing a picture in the encyclopedia of one of these in action, flying out of a rubber raft. Probably the same photo on the sign.

Sempervirens, from what I can find out, it's a different insect - color is even different. This one is much more of an orange than a crimson.

I, for one, am glad Guido's charts account for the, um, curvature of the earth.
