Based on requests to see this bad big toenail, I post this photo. As you can see, the left foot big toeNAIL (edit: my bad) is still in it's early stages of coming off. It doesn't help that my nails are painted purple (with gold sparklies, thank you) so the black/blue beneath it isn't showing yet. Disappointing, I know. I'll post additional photos as this beast comes off.
I am disappointed I won't be able to yank it off and chew it while at J-tree....
Are those climber's hooves or what!

The little piggies have nails too. It is just in the permanent I'm-in-a-climbing-shoe position.
The pain is all gone, finally. Now I can sleep. The swelling (that doesn't show so good in the photo) has also gone away. Here, I'll go remove the nail polish and see what it looks like now.

It's not photographing well (bad camera). It's all funky colored - definitely bruised/black/blue/reds. See how the bottom half is dark? It's dead now too. I'm afraid to poke at the base part of it because I know some giant crater will open up and I'll crack my head on the floor when I pass out in response to that.

It appears that you have Morton's foot. There are climbing shoes designed for that, Dolomites, for one, probably others. Might be easier on your toes, maybe not.
I was expecting it to be grosser, but the ouchtake restored full quesy-ness.

Morton's Foot? Off to google I go. I thought they were just called "hooves". The toe does look better now that the swelling is gone. I think when it starts separating I'll need some prescription drugs...

Dayum. You're good! Looks just like Morton's. I thought the second toe was suppose to be longer on everyone! I've had those pesky (and massively painful) neuromas too. Ever get a corticosteroid shot in a nerve? Believe me, it's something you'd only do once!

That toe is nothing. I bet it won't fall off, the black goup will just migrate to the end as your nail grows. It will be there for a while though, probably a year.
I went through a phase where my toe nail would fall off after everytime I went on a big hike in the mountains. basically spent a couple of years without a toenail. Luckily it eventually grew back like normal and has been fine.

A few people here where I live and I got together to see who had the ugliest feet. Mine are dang funky, But nowhere near as squirrly as the other two.

I am coming into this discussion rather late, and the fate of your toenail is now long gone into history. However, in case this helps either you or anyone else with an injured toe:
Check out my page on fingertip injuries, it has a great drawing of the anatomy of a nail: http://www.davidlnelson.md/Fingertip_crush_injuries.htm, and will help you to follow this explanation.
The photo shows that you have a collection of blood (hematoma) under the nail plate (the thing you trim with a fingernail clipper). This collection of blood under the nail plate is called a subungual hematoma. It is usually due to trauma to a fingertip or toe. The hematoma lifts the nail plate off the nail bed (the pink tissue immediately below the nail plate). It is usually exquisitely painful and can be easily relieved by putting a hole (called "trephining")in the nail plate. I use a specialized motorized drill made just for this purpose in the office, but a hot paperclip is said to be fairly low pressure (I have not tried it), or you could use any simple drill (just don't place pressure on it, both to prevent pain and to avoid overshooting the nail plate, called "past pointing", and further injuring the nail bed, as well as hurting like hell).
The hematoma usually separates the nail plate from the nail bed, sometimes to the point that the nail plate falls off or almost falls off (which seems to be your condition). The nail plate need not be kept on, but it is a great protection for the nail bed. Leave it on if you can.
A new nail will come in, and usually without permanent deformity. The is often transient deformity, say for a year or so. Check out the line drawing that I hyperliked at the beginning of this post. The new nail is formed by the germinal matrix, which is usually undamaged and is located proximal (closer to your heart) to the nail fold (see the picture). The nail plate will grow out slowly, usually taking 3 months in the finger and about twice that in the toe. If you opt to leave the old nail on, protect it with a bandaid or similar, so it will not be torn off (hurts just to write about it). Let the new nail plate push off the old nail plate.
Be careful to avoid a fungal infection in the meantime. I usually suggest Lamisil ointment, to supress the normal fungal elements that are all over all of our feet, mine as well as yours. The subungual hematoma and removed nail plate both violate the normal barriers the body has to fight fungal infection, so I like to supress the fungus with Lamisil.

I have, back in the day when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I was a family doc. The hot paper clip hurts like hell for a second because you do get some heating. However, like you suggest, a small bit from a drill twiddled back and forth between the fingers, resting lightly on the nail, works awesomely well as it slowly carves away the nail. Even better one can do it on oneself, always a bit heroic with the hot paper clip trick.

Toenail update. I'm even more grossed out.
Went climbing last night and finally had to stop because the toenail was killing. Checked it out and see that it's barely hanging on. Won't quite come off because it's still attached to something and I'm chicken it'll hurt (and interfere with climbing).
Those with experience - leave it be? Or pull it?

These pictures are so hot. I have the same problem aswell with both my big toe nails seperating from the flesh. What I usually do is just cut the entire detached area off. Make sure to cut it all off in one chunk, so you can carry it around in your pocket and say 'hey, look how big this is'.

TradIsGood - true - this camera sucks. I could not make it stop focusing on my finger and instead focus on my toenail. Also, I didn't notice when I posted this originally, but the #2 toenail is coming off too. Bleack. I have the big toe taped now. Hopefully it'll come off in a big chunk. because i don't have pockets on most of my clothes, I'll drill a little hole in it, string a piece of leather through it, and wear it as a necklace. I can paint it to match my outfits! it'll look so rad!

jeez...that's sure taking it's sweet time.... Get someone to snag the thing with a needle-nose pliers and yard it off!
Or, if you think it is really still attached to living tissue.....take a nail scissors, and cut away the loose part. At least you won't have the big loose nail pressing and pulling at every movement of your foot.

Crimper, if you can still find it... Most cameras come with some kind of user manual. Your camera may allow you to focus, and hold the focus while moving what the camera is centered on. This is useful when you wish your subject to be located off center in a picture which is fairly common.
It may also have a manual mode - that will allow you to "screw up your shots any way you like," which can be useful in cases like this. :)
If you can't find the manual, your local camera shop might be able to show you what options you have with your camera.
And don't be such a pussy. Do what happie suggests. It will only hurt for a moment. Figure out the camera first though in case it really bleeds. :)

Calling a woman "pussy" just doesn't sit right in my book.....
However, I do feel that, at times, there is need for a descriptive word that conveys the same sense of desperation that the word engenders(pun,yes)for men. This new term is especially useful to women, as most ladies do not find the word "pussy" to have the satisfactory ring that seems to have endeared the usage with men.
Therefore, I have come up with a new term, for use on such an occasion, and that word is "limpid." It is taken from the more base term of "limp dick," which men do use in reference to their male peers when disgusted, though the preference is more often for "pussy."
Note, men will probably not adopt usage of the word "limpid" in thier vocabulary, and are not expected to. But it is with the highest hopes that I humbly submit the word for general use, particularly amongst us chics, when our female climbing partner, whether on the rock or off, is being....well, limpid.
So - Crimpergirl....Why are you being so limp(var.)? Hack that thing off and get on with it!

Daily application of tea tree oil is prescribed. Scrub first with soap and a brush. Rinse thoroughly (so soap is not a barrier.) Apply oil with a q-tip.

My technique for relieving the pressure of a smashed or impacted nail is to get a straight-edged razor, hold one of the sharp corners/points down on the tail and rotate it in circles. Totally painless and you will know when you hit pay-dirt by the eruption. The relief from the pressure/throbbing is almost instant. Again, totally painless. Repeat as necessary.
