No regrets, coyote, we just come from such different sets of circumstance.
Check the Shadows and Light show from the SB Bowl. Jaco and Metheney?,

She performed her song "Both Sides Now" for the opening ceremony for the winter Olympics, but it's not clear if it was live or recorded. They didn't show her performing, and there was something about her having been sick.

God that California vid...
What raw talent. Unless you ever tried to sit on a stage with nothing but a little sound reinforcement. No special effects. No Bass and rhythm to hide behind. Just you!
The way she can 'hold it down' so tight, keep that energy pumping...
With just a dulcimer and her voice?
< chicken skin'n watery eyes.
What an interview...
What a women 'eh !
~~~~~~~~~~~
While living in Hawai'i and spending a lot of time with my friend 'Aunty Nona' I had a chance to enlighten her a little regarding mainstream/mainland folk music.
Aunty had this kids book that someone had given her and she really loved. It was a poem broken into many pages. There was really nice background art on each page.
I first found it one day sitting on a bottom shelf of a small rolling book case in her living room. I picked it up and started to read and immediately recognized the prose. Aunty saw it in my hands, mentioned her joy when reading it and I asked "Well then sit down and I will read it to you." She sat and listened with a growing smile. When I finished reading it (as a poem) I said to her "surely you know who wrote this don't you?" She did not recognize it...
So I picked up her ukulele and began again,
but this time I sang it ;)
Bows and flows of angel hair
and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way...
Wow, I have to admit I like her schlocky folk rock as much as the next guy, but she comes out with some real doozies in the interview: (my typing may not be verbatim)
"America is as perverse right now as Germany was right before WWII and our leadership was as grotesque as it was in Germany at the time every bit. Americans are as ignorant as the Germans were of the atrocities that its government commits around the world but the rest of the world knows so there's a tremendous amount of hostility but the hostility is futile because you can't stop it. . . .
the boys are weakened and the girls are grotesquely aggressive [OK, maybe she's onto something after all]"
She should stick to collecting her fat royalty checks and living the American dream, and save the social commentary for people who have the slightest idea of what they're talking about.
Edit: All I did was post a brief transcription of the interview cited by the OP, with some VERY brief commentary (some of it positive, some of it not). Commenting on what the OP put in his thread is fair game.
If anyone disagrees, she can start her own thread, and I'l stay out of it.
Edit to Philo: hey, maybe you're right, I've met plenty of wimpy American men (maybe I'm one) and super-aggressive American women. That's what JM was getting at, for better or worse.
I'm guessing you didn't even listen to the interview before you wrote your post?
We're in her home town right now. She grew up here in Saskatoon just like I did, at pretty much the same time. But I somehow missed out on whatever it was that gave her what she has.
There's a painting of her on the bus kiosk just outside my father's apartment block.
Indeed, one would hear many a lass singing and playing A Case of You, or many others, wafting out of that little coffee house behind the Curry kitchen, practicing with open tuning, 12 strings and such. Sweet sounds.
edith and the kingpin, the hissing of summer lawns.
i owe to her the empathy i feel for the mix of romantic vulnerablity and alluring prowess so often
on display across the sexual divide, perhaps even my entrainment in dreams that were not mine.
she must have been a force of nature to work with, gauging by the awesome talent she attracted.
where others may show up to lay down the vocals, her work is an expression of feminine authority and right of authorship
that rides in on unflinching grace such that it need not be defended. even when what she did was not for my ear,
some of her experimental reaches, i followed with respect.
i've been replaying "both sides now" from the opening ceremonies in vancouver.
she pulls each phrase like a petal of taffy...with surety.
her deeper register embued with patient gesture,
the fragrance of a mellowed cask hangs in time.
a lifetime echoes in it's hold
When still living near Stoney Pt., Russ, Dennis, and I wrote her a 'fan' letter, inviting her to come climbing with us at Stoney Point. I'm not sure we ever figured out where to send it or not. The letter might still survive in a box of letters somewhere...
Only a couple of weeks ago, I sang "Circle Game" around a campfire, having memorized it many years ago...
I love this verse,
Sixteen springs and sixteen summer gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town
And they tell him, "Take your time it won't be long now
Til you drag your feet to slow the circles down..."
Remind anyone of someone you know???
I was impressed when Covington rolled into Yosemite Valley in his white Porsche roadster and his guitar. Covington was on the verge of signing a recording contract(Simon & Garfunkel were his producers)- that's how involved he was in the music business. He mentioned to me once that Joni Mitchell was a friend so it's possible that she was thinking of him with "Michael from Mountains".
Rocker..... we all did. some will not admit it. I really love her music, she gets deep down into what is important with people and human feelings. To bad she smokes ciggs and ruined her voice.
Not to OT this but somebody up thread pointed out how difficult it is to get on stage with only your voice and a instrument. Here is a video that might just surprise some of you. Warning some folks says she is a man.... I can't figure out why some would say that.
Her guitar work is interesting, especially considering she must alter style from standard methods to compensate for the effects of polio.
True story:
My wife whad just purchased the "Blue" album right after it came out (in 1971 ?), She was sitting in the college student union at Edinboro (then college), PA reading the liner notes. Joni was still relatively unknown then in bumfu*k PA. A woman came up to her and said "I know her". My wife, thinking she meant she had "heard of her" said something like, "so, you've heard the album ?". The woman said, "No, I know her. I did not know she had an album." Apparently, she lived with Joni in some cave in Greece. She and my wife took the album home and listened, the woman describing several of the influences on the songs relating to her years in Greece. They have been friends since.
Bump for recovery.
Little did I know of her recent aneurysm until today.
So many revere this lady's pipes and her class act.
Many ST posters had crushes on her, as you've seen here;
and they're gonna aim their hoses on you, Chief!
Let's keep her around a bit longer, God. Paradise can wait.
