Yep, probably, but there's more Californians here than there. And plenty of people on both forums, too, but no harm getting word out, and then deleting once resolved.

If this is totally out of character for the young man, the sheriff's office is responsible for searches and should be contacted. There is heightened sensitivity to taking such reports seriously, given recent high profile cases like the Kim family in Oregon....any information that can help them locate the car (both where it may be and where it is not) and determine a possible site would be very useful.

Best wishes.

Wishing the best for all.

My beautiful blond hair German neighbor went to Greece on a school field trip. Met a good looking Greek dude....and ....well, shacked up with him. Neglecting the niceties of telling anyone or even calling her parents. It evidently caused quite the international brohaha until she went home about a month after her classmates and turned up quite unannounced and unexpected at her folks house. Whew. What a handful.

Hop the lad shows up with a good story and in fine form as well.

I already contacted to the sheriff's office and they checked all boldering locations near Bishop today. No car was found. I called them again recently and asked to check a climbing campground but did not have response yet. Anyway I'm going to drive to Bishop tomorrow morning.

Vitaly, Do you know what kind of gear he had with him? As Im sure you know there are many Alpine routes in the area. Over thanksgiving weekend three years ago I got stuck on Whitney's East Buttress. The worst night of my life, I had to endure 10 degree weather with 30 mph winds with only a light weight jacket. The worst part was knowing my parents were thinking I was either dead or seriously hurt and not being able to communicate with them. Im guessing this might be the case. Maybe check the Whitney Portal area as well. I hope you're able to find him soon. Keep us posted.

He probably took his harness and helmet but it looks like all ropes, cams, slings and even quickdraws are at home. He is not a fun of any kind long multi-pitch/trad routes so I don't think he is in Alpine area.

is there any reason he might be trying to NOT be found? first question in my mind...or is he just being irresponsible?

cellphone to call or track? or atm/credit cards to track?

do they keep records of who crosses the border to mexico? anyway to access those? assume sheriff knows/has access to that but what do i know....

(the facebook/myspace thing isnt a bad idea)

hope he's off chasing women, partying and pulling down too hard to remember to call home

that said...its only been three days eh? i've gone quite a bit longer than that without calling home, when i was a kid....still do....

I would hope the Bishop Police talked to the host at The Pit to see if that car was registered there, and for how long.

Anyways, given that he was in the milks on Sunday, I don't think he is stuck on some winter alpine route. I'm imagining this will have a pretty quick resolution.

He's not at the South Lake Parking lot. We just drove up there to pick up a guy who was stuck out by the underestimated storm Friday and Saturday.

I'll keep my ears open.

Also I am a reporter with the local radio station so I can get the word out if you want. There are problems with this, such as the embarrasment that Skipt was talking about above, but it could also help get more eyes out looking, and a brains thinking about whether they saw your son or not.

Let me know.

e-mail me through the supertopo if this is something I can help you with. Either way works for me.

It looks like he wants to be not found but I don't know any real reason for that. Everything was OK until he disappeared. About driving Infiniti it's 7 years old used car still in a good condition but not as fancy and expensive as you may think. And he doesn't have any money as far as I know even for food and gas. May be just a few bucks so there is an option that he came up there with some friends and this is why the sheriff didn't find his car.

tom woods please make an announcement on the radio if you can. More people are involved is the better.
I'm going to drive to Bishop today and check Buttermilk, Happies and Pit. Are there any other places I should visit?

Hi Vitaly,

As of 1300 today, this car is at the Buttermilks, parked on the west(ish) side of the road between the Peabodies and the Birthday Boulders parking area. I don't know for sure if Artem is one of the people I saw climbing, but I do know for sure that the car is there. Good luck...

Just a thought...maybe it would be good to PM or call Vitaly instead of publicize when the car's been spotted. As long as we eventually get the update that he's alright, it might be better to go about updates privately.

My brother ran away in France on a school trip when he was 17 and didn't get in touch with us for a week or so. It was awful! His plan was to work at a hostel in exchange for board and do tricks on the beach in Nice for spare money. Anyway, he didn't want to be found for a while and did a good job monitoring who knew what. My mother was distraught. After a while, he would pick up when I called, so I finally convinced him he should negotiate for a ticket home with our parents by calling BEFORE his original return flight took off (so the change fees would be less, something that bizarrely made sense to him at the time...he was probably ready to go home by that point) and he called them. When he showed up at Charles de Gaulle for his new flight (pfew!), he was taken into custody and escorted onto the plane, since it had become an international affair. He's lucky to have graduated from high school after that little mishap.

That was a horrible time. I am so sorry!

EDIT: Sorry, looking below, I didn't mean anything in particular by my post...no judgment or claim to know any details about situations like this. Just made me think of my bone headed brother (who I love very much...and WILL judge affectionately!!!).

A projectile goes and matter is scattered, some may grin and others
characterize as good or bad.

Yes, family matters usually should be sealed and not made public,
which this place is for the most part. Reads as though he is ok which
at this time I characterize as ok, and I don't always grin.

Just found this Thread. When I saw the pic with no other information I thought, Wow, he looks like a guy I saw at the Buttermilks late Sunday afternoon near dark.

Then I read on and see that perhaps he was at the Buttermilks and I did see him. If indeed it was him,,,,,,tall, thin, kinda white (no so cal tan) he was not under dressed for the chill. He was energetic running around with a smile on his face and said hi as he passed me. He did not act like he was under the influence of anything. He seemed fine. Is he still AWOL? Please let me know.....I will be praying. Peace, lynnie

Really glad the outcome was a Good One. Having raised 2 boys and 2 girls, unless he does this on a real regular basis and did something Bad, I would not be too harsh. Some people are married and supporting a family at his age. Like the old song says, "He's not a kid anymore."

Oh, gezzzzz Jingy !!! What I Meant was he looked happy and fine and not like someone depressed or ready to do something crazy and he didn't look like he was on drugs or alcohol.
