Ken are you thinking of the Everest East Face Expedition that was lead by Jim Morrissay and included a bunch of Cali climbers such as Lou Reichart?

There was an expedition to the North side in 1983 led by Bob Craig. That team included Galen Rowell, Kim Schmitz, Steve Mckinney and Mike Graber - is that the trip you're considering?

There is a signed post card on Ebay and I am wondering if it is genuine. It seems a little suspect to me.

I do not remember that expedition but the seller is legit. I bought a 1924 card from him years ago. As said the card is of little historical value as it was another Nepal expedition. What is interesting is the post mark. July is the middle of the monsoon so either they got the postcards stamped really late after a spring expedition or really early for a fall expedition. My guess is that it was a fall expedition as Bass and Wells were part of a German team on the South Side that spring.

Edit - I found this webpage - look at the blurb on Jim Sano, President, Geographic Expeditions:

There is the Yosemite connection.

That was the American West Ridge Expedition of 1983.

Jim Sano was the leader.
Members were Chas Macquarie, Todd Bibler, Sandy Stewart, Claude Fiddler, Alex Moad, Shari Kearny, Lucy Smith, Doug Dalquist, Eric Reynolds, Annie Whitehouse, Rennie Jackson, Sue Giller, Susan Buren, and Rodney Lorich.

They followed the Yugoslav route to the top of the West Shoulder and then went up the Hornbein Couloir. Rennie Jackson and Annie Whitehouse reached 8540 meters, but were turned back by high winds.
