So, in honor of my Dad's 60th birthday, we've stolen and hidden my Dad's classroom couch (where he frequently naps). The plan is to send him ransom notes and pictures of the couch in strange places. At first, realistic (e.g. places in Vermont, on a truck, near where he lives), and later, ridiculous places.

In the meantime, the ransom notes will have him running around town to various people that he has pranked (and he has pranked a lot of people). Should be entertaining.

Problem is, I suck at photoshop. Been trying to put this couch in front of this church, with no luck. Can you help? How do you do it? (I understand this is a complicated issue now).

Also, if anyone has any fun ideas for the couch ... I'd love to use your photoshopped ideas!

Here is the couch:

Oh, for the next week or two.

Here's the couch's blog!
http://fredscouch.blogspot.com/2009/11/harumph.html

The couch was stolen this afternoon... the theft will be discovered in the morning, so it would be hilarious to send the first ransom note in the morning.

How do you combine the couch and the white house? I had trouble with different photos being different sizes?

I have ideas for the note/pic combos...

When I read the initial post, I thought of the traveling gnome being pictured everywhere the traveler went.

In this case though, I imagine seeing your favorite napping place doing things the napper never imagined.....

slummin' it down on skid row...

partyin' with the co-eds at the sorority...

making videos with the co-eds at the sorority...

With each of the pictures, you should include slightly higher demands..

Until the last demand, for everything, with a picture of the couch sitting at the lip of the grand canyon...

that's my limited idea... but the sky is the limit here....

As for the couch vs background size.

Use a background that's large enough, paste the couch layer in. With the pointer tool selected you should be able to see the 'bounding box' around the couch(if that's the layer you have selected). You can then grab the corners and resize. hold the shift key down as you do it to maintain the size ratio.

hope this helps

If you really want to make this at all remotely believable, it's a fair amount of work - requiring you to shoot your couch in different lighting situations and angles suitable for the context/image.
Adding realistic shadows is also critical and not straightforward by any means. Just saying...

AWESOME you guys!!!

LMAO!

The Theft should be discovered tomorrow, along with a ransom note ordering Dad to Go Kiss Del's (his friend) NY Giants Flag. (He stole Del's NY Giants flag last month, and ransomed Del to Go Kiss Chuck's Red Sox Banner).

Climbing photos will have to come later, or he will immediately suspect me. Part of the fun is that I'm in California, and he is in Vermont. Of course, I have several co-conspirators in Vermont, but the only obvious culprit is my sister, and she doesn't have access to the school (and the couch).

Photos will be posted on the blog, unless anyone objects.

The Ransom Note:

Dear Fred,

By now you've probably noticed your couch is gone. It is on the move. If you don't believe me, check here:

http://fredscouch.blogspot.com/

If you want to see your couch again, you'll have to cooperate with me. The first task that you must complete is...

Go Kiss Del Cook's NY Giants Flag.

That's right. And you better get it done fast, or the couch will start traveling. Have Del contact me (via email) when you've completed your task.

-CT

Fred: The first reply:

There is no doubt in my mind that Gary is behind this theft. Only he could hide his email address as "Couch Thief".

I'm desparate! No nap today!

fred

Fred: The second reply:

I went up to Del Cook's at the HS break and kissed the Giants flag. My couch is lonely.

fred.

Me, again

You did? Is there evidence?

I don't think your couch is lonely...

http://fredscouch.blogspot.com/

Added neebee's photo from Barcelona in response

Fred

Take my word for it. After all....would I lie?

My couch might not be lonely...but is it cold?

Me

Oh dear, not good enough. Your next task is to bring your lovely wife, Terry, and your lovely mother-in-law, Jeanette, some flowers. You know where and from whom to get these flowers in town. Ya know, between Cafe Provence and the Watershed.

Oh, and it is DEFINITELY not cold down here!

Hey guys,

Thank you your most *excellent* contributions. I'd have used *all* of them if I'd had more time. I will be showing *all* of them to my Dad over the holidays (navigating Supertopo might be a bit much for him!)

In any case, he had no idea that my sister and I were behind it, and the revelation was, apparently, quite hilarious.

There is a small party at the house, people in and out for a few hours. My sister arrives with a bottle of wine and a card from "The Couch Thief" and leaves it on the front porch for the next guest to discover. The next guest discovers it ... the card say to check the blog at 5pm. The blog had a

hi, I am Fred French Nightmare Friend!!!!!! This was so much fun but he thought I was the one that had started all of this because I am always trying to pick on him for something. So he sent me a bunch of DEAD flowers that stunk at my place of employment which is an elementary school, so you can imagine the questions my students had!!!!! But I got even, he also received dead, rotten flowers with a huge bunch of balloons at his school. It was great being part of this scenario, Joyeux Noel to all.

Fred's French Friend,
Jeannine

Thanks for all your efforts to detail the travels of my couch.

You ALL have too much time on your hands. Obviously you are all academics.

Thanks.

hey there, say, dear wonderful cleo!! i feel bad now, that i took my pics down...

but, yeah, as to copyright, and the 'many places in the world' of photos, i used, i just got worried...

i STILL have the pics, though...
if you ever need them...

this was SUCH a wonderful thread to be part of ...
it was a wonderful idea...

had never seen anything like this...
good for you, and the love for your daddy!!!

say, since everyone has there pics, up here...
perhaps i will put mine back up...

they were mostly just well known places around the world, with the sofa...
i will try, tomorrow... before the ' midnight pumpkin' hour...

EDIT:

say, cleo!

here are the missing pitures...

wheww... okay, got them all in...
they just really DO belong here, for him...

in case, you visit in the future, achives...
