This arcane piece of climbing history comes to us via Doug Robinson from Jerry Galwas. I did what I could with retouching the newspaper image. Hilarious. Obviously one hell of a long time ago. This is real and not some manipulation of mine but obviously is one by the ad men.

Hi Peter,

The 1950’s & early 1960’s pictures of Harding, show
just what a hunk he was in his day!!

I will, go so far as to, compare him with James Dean,
who some people thought was good looking.
I think Warren was not only was as attractive, but better.

He was not acting tough, he was tough & yes, easy on the eyes.

Not hard to see why beautiful women would have volunteered to keep him company back then, it is my opinion, they would not of stayed around long if he had only looked good, if you get my drift. Bump for W.H.

I only saw glimpses of that hot guy, but even then, he had that sparkle in his eyes.

I think in a perfect world, Warren would have loved us to remember him as a young, hot guy, at the top of his game, not the characterized Batso, of the last years.

That’s the beauty of the web, we can see all sides, not just the last chapter.

Goldline was, well, gold. White was Columbia, different manufacturer and a little softer but essentially the same.

They both worked fine if you didn't know anything else. I took and held (hip belay) thirty footers on Goldline, both in the Valley.

Here's a chunk of Columbia from Smoke Blanchard, a genuine "Smoke's String" from his Rock Course in the Buttermilk. It's 5/16" = about 7 mm.

Jerry had the shot of Warren labeled "from a Louisiana billboard." I like the thought of Harding flying over freeways across the land.

Hey DMT,

Do you mean this

"Warren Harding

b. 1924. Also known as "Batso", Warren Harding was, along with Dean Caldwell ("Wizard"), the first to climb El Capitan in Yosemite Valley, California. In the history of climbing, Harding is described (by himself) as being of "varying and unpredictable levels of ability and dedication but invariably characterized by shallowness of character, general depravity, and self-aggrandizement." A fond lover of his "moutain red" (wine), his ascent of El Cap was sponsored by Christian Brothers. Harding was also the president of the now non-existent L.S.E.D. & F.S. (Lower Sierra, Eating Drinking, and Farcing Society). Never absent of humor and wine, Harding is a classic hardman of climbing as well as a respected drinking friend in the Elysium Fields of Imbibation.

Panegyric: Run the Half Dome Mist trail in 95 degree weather, with no water, to the top and back. "

Or Hemingways post.

Park Rat, you are talking about Alice Flomp, his longtime companion?
She would know him quite well.
Would she mind if you told us what she may have told you about him?

Ah yes.... nothing makes me want to crack open a cold one! I guess the ad worked, seeing how the climbing industry flourished shortly after the placement of this ad in the Sports Illustrated!

LOL

Here we have a photo of the stone faced, ruggedly handsome climber, part way up a mammoth peak, as he stares down the next pitch of the climb to the top of the world.... And his buddy with the camera.. with a cold one in his hand???

very convincing!

These ads bring to mind an old joke:

Q: What's the difference between US beer (e.g. Busch) and making love in a canoe?

A: None. They're both f***ing close to water.

(Definition of Canuck: Someone who know how to make love in a canoe...)
