I imagine it should be fairly easy to locate them. Climbers generally know where they are.
It's been a very busy SAR season for us the past month though.

Kev, I don't think it's your friends. The Obelisk is approached from Crown Valley trailhead near Wishon.

There was a story in the Fresno Bee this morning about missing "hikers and climbers" who were expected to return to the Crown Valley trailhead. Although details were different, the similarities are frighteningly eerie. My thoughts and prayers go out to all concerned -- whether one party or two. It's already clouding over, and the outlook for Tuesday and Wednesday is stormy (otherwise, I was hoping to take a day off and do some climbing myself).

Sounds like Florence Lake may have been a typo. Hope your friends are okay Kev. And, of course, it sucks no matter who it is.

Well here's what the Fresno Bee had to say...Scares me since I know someone who was in a party of 3 (2 men and one women). This also sounds like the one I know - I've warned her about back country in the mountains...

9:56 a.m.: Two missing hikers in the John Muir Wilderness were seen by a California Highway Patrol helicopter this morning and a rescue team is en route, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said.

The hikers are near Obelisk Mountain, southeast of Wishon Reservoir at the Crown Valley Trailhead at an elevation of about 10,000 feet, sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice said. The helicopter was unable to land in the rugged terrain and it will take a ground team six to seven hours to reach them, he added.

The two hikers were part of a group of three. One of them, a woman, was injured; a fellow hiker stayed with her while the third left to seek help.

The helicopter crew said the woman and another person were at the Obelisk site. The hikers were not equipped for cold weather, according to the sheriff's office.

The Fresno County search and rescue team is looking for two hikers near Wishon Reservoir.

The hikers are believed to be near the Crown Valley trailhead, about 10,000 feet in elevation. One of the hikers, a woman, was injured while a group of three subjects was hiking and climbing.

The hikers were not equipped for the cold weather, according to the sheriff’s department.

One of the three hikers left the others to contact help and the sheriff’s department activated a search and rescue.

Awesome. I didn't get a standby page, so I kinda figured they were found. Hope everyone's ok. Something is getting reported wierd here though. Who would do a 6-7 hr approach and climb in one day?

Snaps,

That's exactly what I was thinking. That's a huge approach, not just length wise, but it's a lot of rolling hill up and down. I've never heard of it being anything but a backpack trip. Maybe they packed in, left all the cold weather clothes at basecamp, got hurt climbing or en route, and were then stranded without warm clothes.

Um if it's who I think they were hiking in one day, climbing the next and hiking out the same day. Anyhow, hopefully they're ok.

--

11:28 a.m.: A woman injured while rock climbing in the John Muir Wilderness is dead, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said today.

The 36-year-old woman, who has not been identified, died while climbing with two others on Obelisk Mountain, southeast of Wishon Reservoir, sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice said.

A search and rescue team reached the area just before 11 a.m. Two other climbers with the woman were able to get to her after she fell Sunday. One person stayed with her while the second hiked out for help. The sheriff's office learned about the fall just before 8 p.m. Sunday and a search team was sent out a short time later. A California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the two people near the 9,700-foot mountain this morning but was unable to land in the rugged terrain, so a ground team hiked in. The team is bringing out the second person hiker and the woman's body.
