Does anyone have an idea what a reasonable cost for a front wheel bearing replacement would be on a 1990 Subaru Legacy? I'm not going to be able to do it myself (bc I'm a mechanical idiot), but the prices I'm getting quoted in western CO are in the neighborhood of $450-500. I don't want to pay... but I don't want my wheel to fall off either. Does this sound like a reasonable and unfortunate cost? any other ideas? thanks

The wheel bearing $40 or $50 bucks.
But you gotta know how to disassemble and rebuild with the proper tools.
This where the $400 smackers comes in. You have the mechanic do it and you're paying for the labor along with the shops overhead.
If you don't have your own personal mechanic your outa luck and you will have send your money to the guy who knows.

dont pay it... 300 is your price! find one that;s in that range. or do it your self. I;d giv eyou a hand but i'mon the other side of the state. not that hard at all! get a guide to your car (make and year) and follow it step by step. you'll love packing that bearing with grese by hand.... it ain't rocket science and don't worry about the wheeel falling off. that's what all the nuts are for! do it if you have time. subys are easy when it comes to f wheel stuff.
good luck.
note as for proper tools. you can borrow for free any specil tools you'll need for the job at auto zone or whereever. they let you rent them for free jsut ask. you leave a deposit and they give it to you for however long you need it and then give you all your $ back when you return it. you'll only need one or 2 for this. a puller and poss. a torque wrench.
you can do it.

Wheel bearings vary greatly in difficulty of repair, but I assure you, if you do it yourself you will understand how silly paying $450 for that job is, unless you make $450 per day at a job.

I have a subaru and have gotten all 4 wheel bearings replaced over the years, at 4 different mechanics and in 2 different states...
my average has been about $300-325 so $450 seems steep to me. And I live in the bay area, where labor rates per hour are close to $100. If I remember, it takes about 2 1/2 hrs of labor (average blue book) plus about $50 for the part.
good luck!

The front wheel bearing is pressed into the hub. Many times the bad bearing will damage the hub to the point were it also needs replacement(the new bearing HAS to be tight in the hub or it'll be ruined)
The repair shop MAY have included a new hub in the estimate, which would make it fair. If a hub is needed at additional cost their estimate is sorta high.
Doing it yourself is ok-but it sure helps having someone there to mentor you. You are messing with axles and braking components.
