I got a call from Sammy Lee this afternoon with shockingly sad news. Paul McDaniel, died unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm a day and a half ago.

I met Paul on his recent trip here to Colorado. Dave and I met Sammy, his wife Kim and Paul and climbed for a couple of days. It was great fun. He had decided that he wanted to come back to the area to go to law school. He fell in love with the place.

I just wanted to get the word out about his sad death. Another reminder not to take *one* moment or *one* person for granted.

Such a young guy. I don't know his parents but can only briefly imagine their unbearable heartbreak right now.

My condolences to the friends and family of Paul.
And to you and Dave too, Callie.
Do you know how young Paul was?
He doesn't look to be more than a teenager.
My sincerest sympathy to all.

He was young. He attended college in Memphis TN. He was born in 1984. That makes him 23 or 24.

Jaybro - he never stopped smiling the entire time. It was infectious! He was looking forward to coming back next year and climbing in Eldo.

*edited to correct his age - I guessed initially.

Crimpie,

Thanks for the pictures of, I'm sure, An exceptional young man. Saddened and crying. Life is indeed, a gift. Helping others to enjoy it is also a gift. Which gift you gave to young Paul, Crimpie.

Working with Cancer kids has me always asking , why do some of us leave so young? Is there any reason to all of this? Or... Is this really just random chaos? Maybe it is to show us to appreciate what we ourselves have... To show us just how precious our time is.
Then again, maybe they are leaving us because they somehow graduated early from this training camp we call life.
I don't have the answers. I only have my sympathy and my ability to give my heart to all of you.

Be kind people... We shouldn't waste out time doing anything else.

If anyone is interested here is a partial TR and photos from the couple of days climbing with Paul and Sam at Lumpy Ridge in Estes Park.

Sammy Lee was working on a full TR of the trip to post here. We were just waiting on the rest of the photos in Paul's camera. I am sure there are some great ones there.

It's sad. I've used that word in too many ST posts lately, and still it seems the truest one. Life is so fleeting.

Condolences to Paul's family and friends. And thanks for noting his passage here.

hey there dear crimpergirl... oh my....

you know, the timing, in that you all had this wonderful trip first, will always be cherished... perhaps--one never knows--well perhaps somehow young paul found a bit of heaven's feelings here first, as he felt oneness with the god's great out doors before he passed on...

there must have been some very special reason for the trip happening for them all, first, before he died---he could have died sooner and never had this wonderful trip, and the memories for you all and sammy and wife would never be tucked in their/or your hearts...

i am very sorry to hear of this loss, and the sadness that it had to happen so fast, and when a young man never got to make his mark of a life's goal.... my prayers for you all and deep condolences...

*hey there sammy lee... once, again, but to you, more personaly, i am very sorry to learn of this loss... may god help you face the hard trail from all this...

Very Sad.
My condolences, and prayers to Paul's Family, and You and Dave also.
I know what the Family, and you guys are going thru, as I also lost someone very, very dear to me in 1979, to a
brain aneurysm.

Do you know if he suffered from headaches Crimpie?
Sometimes there are symptoms, and sometimes they hit right out of the blue.
My wife was about the same age, 24, when she had her aneurysm.
She was in great health, after giving birth to our daughter 2 weeks earlier, and had no symptoms.

From the pics you posted, He looks like he was a very happy person. Always SMILING

More condolences and best wishes to you
and the Family.
