There was a memorial service today at the VA (Joe was a heli mechanic and tail gunner in Viet Nam) for longtime So Cal climber Joe Christy.

RIP my friend.

My condolences to you JL, and all the family & friends of Joe.

This is getting to be an all too frequent occurrence these days.

Just surfin' the tsunami of life

I'm sure he's already out there somewhere running laps on those perfect 5.12s in the sky...working on his tan and guzzling Diet Cokes.

Joe was one of the kindest, funniest men I'd ever met. The chaplain got it right, though, when he said we keep paying for our wars long after the peace treaty's been signed and the soldiers have gone home.

So for Joe, from The Lion King:

Circle of Life

From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
Theres more to be seen than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done

Some say eat or be eaten
Some say live and let live
But all are agreed as they join the stampede
You should never take more than you give

In the circle of life
Its the wheel of fortune
Its the leap of faith
Its the band of hope
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle, the circle of life

Some of us fall by the wayside
And some of us soar to the stars
And some of us sail through our troubles
And some have to live with the scars

Theres far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round

John:

Just saw this thread and it deserves a bump.
Joe was a fixture in the Los Angeles climbing scene for many years.
He was a mentor and an inspiration.
One of the most-ripped older climbers ever.
I got the extreme pleasure of climbing with Joe on some of his Malibu Creek routes (also put up and equipped by yourself, Largo) on many occasions.
We had fine days at Williamson, Devil's Punchbowl, and J-Tree together.
I will always remember his glee at announcing his first 5.12a redpoint - at age 55!

He will be missed.

I never met Joe Christy JL, but if he was a friend of yours, he was a friend of mine.

I haven't seen Joe in awhile, so finding this thread is something of a surprise. Not sure what happened, but I wasn't even aware that he was sick. Last I saw him he looked as good as ever. My condolences to all his friends and family. He will be missed. RIP.
