Maybe someone already caught this in a thread I missed, but if not, something a little different from far away but not long ago:

A thread called "Czech Tower Jumping and Cedar Wright" ran a little while ago. We had a similar craze hit Tucson for a while back in the seventies though it never really on caught due to the very ankle twists that obviously plague these sportsman.

They showed a movie about this at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival a few years ago. The organizer is from Slovakia, and so has connections that help with obtaining such films. Central Europe has some quite distinctive mountain cultures. Whether it's climbing at Elbsandstein, the tower jumping, or other things, they definitely have the spirit.

I wonder what they'd think of slacklining?

Hm, another variant I don't think I'll be trying. . .

Looks pretty cool though.

Having just turned fifty, I think that I'd rather take my knocks learning to fly and land in some other mode!

Great source of daydreams whenever the gap narrows.

There is a little tower at Windy Point in Tucson called Thunderhead Spire that has a jump exit. On the FA Rich Thompson and I were looking for a place to put in a rappel station on the summit of the railroad spike shaped tower. Rich wanted to place the anchors out at the lip of the summit block to produce the best photo.

I objected and then comically jumped off into the air and stuck the landing on a slab below. "Go ahead, do whatever you want," I said with a laugh and Rich commenced to do his level best to take the head off the nail while on rappel. Nice shot though!

There's always the Mace in Sedona- that's a good jump but once was enough for me.

Agreed - jumping looks risky/stupid given the climber talking about how a certain jump "always" hurts him. Maybe that's a signal to stop! And a beer to start the day? Also seems silly. Yet, fun to see the towers pictured and clips of climbers in space.

Then there's the question of how they count "ascents" of jumped to towers. Talk about NOT ground up ...

The Mace - I seem to remember a long, wide stem, maybe a kind of hop push out. Is it/was it really a jump?

Getting to the summit of Mace requires the stem. Jumping back to the lower tower is optional now. There are other Sedona routes that demand jumps from tower to tower though...

I was there last summer and most of the climbers and jumpers in The Czech Republic where well trained athletes, and even if some of them have a beer for breakfast they where more professional then some of the Potheads at Camp 4 ;-)

cool video, I wonder what the climbs are like, though.

lots of good jumps in Sedona. My favorite is Oak Creek Spire, I think it may warrant a Grade 4!?!

"Jump!" was co directed and co produced by John Catto and Allen Hill. Just wanted to set the record start.
