In the Sierra above Bishop, the search continues for a hiker reported missing on July Fourth.

On this fourth day of search operations, rescuers planned to return to the back country near Bishop Pass to look for the missing man.

According to Inyo Sheriff Deputies, 44 year old Southern California resident Ric DeVan set out for Mt. Goode near Bishop Pass on the Fourth. DeVan, along with his wife and daughter set out toward Bishop Pass on Thursday July 3rd.

The plan was to spend the night of Third by himself, hike up Mt. Goode, traverse the ridge to Mt. Johnson, then head down to meet up with his wife and daughter at Treasure Lakes on the Fourth. When DeVan failed to show up at Treasure Lakes on the Fourth, his family members reported him missing.

Inyo Search and Rescue volunteers, along Mono County SAR and China Lake Mountain Rescue Team members have searched the area since Saturday but by last report had not found the missing man. Deputies report that DeVan did sign the summit register on Mt. Goode, stating that he planned to traverse to Mt. Johnson.

The Inyo Sheriff’s Department is looking for people who may have seen the missing man hiking on Thursday the Third, and Friday the Fourth in the Bishop Pass area. DeVan is said to have been wearing a yellow shirt with black side panels, tan pants, light colored back pack, grey jacket with black trim, a beige or green ball cap, and an orange, gold, and purple National Geographic bandanna. DeVan also had a Khaki one person tent.

If you were hiking near Bishop Pass on Friday the Fourth of July, and you saw someone who fits this description call the Inyo Sheriff’s Department at 873-7887 or 878- 0383.
please help if you can

The official search and rescue teams are not going out anymore and it is up to family,

friends and the community to continue the search for Ric. Ric has been missing less

than a week so there is a realistic hope that he may have survived what ever has

kept him from returning to his family. Thanks so much to you all for all the prayers and

support. Contact my son Mike at 619 966-9712 or 760 216-3151 Please spread

the word via e-mail and forums to solicit volanteers for the search. We need all

the help and eyes we can get to find him!!

You never know neebee, we will pray and hope, big time. Prayers for food and shelter and warmth and protection and someone to find the traveler. lrl and God's comfort and peace for the family and friends....I know how hard it is....much less trying to deal with all of it alone.

He's a climber and had the foresight to bring a bivy tent. He should be o.k., hopefully he stays put and just hangs on till he's found. He's either lost or incapicitated, hang in there bro, help is on the way. Prayers and hope....

for what is worth, i just called the Posse Hut(SAR Compound) and spoke with tonights operations chief (i think i got that right).

anyway, he since im not a SAR they can't really use my help as a volunteer... i think for insurance purposes.

by the way, contrary to what has been posted here and at SP, official SAR efforts are still under way.

here are some #'s

This is so sad and frustrating and I don't even know the missing guy. How is it possible that nothing, no trace, no sign, nada has been found? It kind of blows my mind. I am thinking only the best wishes for Ric and his family.

hey there ... i am still praying too....

say, isn't there anyway to guess or second guess what he may have done... ?

also, no one has seen any trail marks at all... this is very sad...

how about finding folks that have gone this route before and ask them if there is some bad area, or hard to follow trails or whatever... you know what i mean... stuff that could give a clue as to what may have happened....

oh, well... i know you all know this stuff... just throwing it all out again...

*what about night fly-overs? is this allowed... do fires show up? or flash signals... ??? ... or those little infa red deals (or do folks not take those on hikes.. ???)... i know kids use them a lot...

Have dogs been used?

Can we positively rule out the guy skipping on the family?

Not being cold, just logical, I do not know the family situation, so I leave it open for investigation if all else fails, if I were in the business of solving mysteries.
The person has to be there in order to find him.

Dr. Rock- The ivestigators look into skipping, but this one I have to say no way. There's too many freinds and loved ones looking for him.

As for no sign. He did sign the register on Goode saying he was headed for Johnson and all points between. After that, yeah, there's not much, or nothing depending on who's footprint was found on the ridge between Goode and Trap peak. There were some climbers on a real long traverse to the evolutions before DeVan was there. That print could have been theirs.

Mike- if you do head to the moraines below Goode. I searched the ridge from Trapazoid down to the saddle at Hurd Peak. There was a large snowfield on the Goode side of the ridge that may have running water and possibly a snow tunnel type thing underneath.

Our assignment turned toward treasure lakes there and I can't be sure that other teams hit it. It might be worth checking out.

That is one problem with speculation, by us on the ground. We don't always know what has been done already.

Hello All,
I just spoke with Shannon, Ric's sister. The search team has found what they suspect is Ric's backpack. They are taking it down the mountain as I write to be identified by Vickie, Ric's wife. If it is in fact Ric's it does not bode well. It was found on a class 2 trail near Mt. Goode that gave way to a poosible 400 ft drop. We will know more in the morning when the area near the find can be searched more throughly. It's not impossible and miracles do happen but it has been 12 days and 400 ft is a long way. This was posted a few minutes ago by Ric's dad on the whitney portal store forum:

"The search team comprised of family and friends, and friends of friends, continued the search through last evening, the 15th, when Ric's backpack was discovered east of Mt. Goode near the base of a no-name peak identified as 12,689. Brant Diddon, a climbing guide and instructor from Los Angeles, located the backpack about 5:00 PM Tuesday evening. Brant, a friend of a friend of the family, volunteered to help in the search.

The Sheriff was notified and he sent his "recovery" team to the mountain this morning to locate and recover the body. Ric's body was located several hundred feet up the mountain from the backpack, and will be returned to Bishop as soon as the weather permits. "
