Sorry to hear this. But to live 71 years and go out while climbing... Not a bad deal IMO. A full life. Peace to him, his family and friends.

Though I didn't know Paul well, we met a few times. In addition to his other accomplishments, he drew some great climbing cartoons. I have one somewhere and if I can find it will post a copy.

Sorry to hear of his passing.

Ron,

I'm sorry to hear that Paul died in a climbing accident. 71 is too soon. Not as tragic as dying at 21, but still very sad.

I met him a few times when I was living in Boston in the early 80s, on climbing trips to Connecticut with Al Rubin. At that time Al climbed with any number of 3 Pauls - Duval, Ledoux, and Niland!

"It is with deep regret that we post this announcement.

Paul Duval, a Needles pioneer, icon and friend to us all, died yesterday in a climbing accident at the Moonlight Ridge area. The accident involved mistaking the mark near the end of a rope for the mark at the center of the rope and resulted in rappelling off the short end.

Our condolences to his family and loved ones.

McQ"

Sad to see the deceptive rope marks contributed to his death.
Be careful out there and don't trust any marks on an unfamiliar rope.

"El Potrero Chico, Mexico 01-2008

Just got back from another ten days at EPC. Saw several NH climbers, as well as an IMCS guide. Old time Boston AMC climber Paul Duval and his wife, Karen, are still spending winters at their house in the potrero. They are both still climbing 10s and in good health."

man. i'm almost getting numb to this sh#t -- so many people have gone on in the last two years.

i climbed with paul often when i lived in boston; he was one of the first climbers i met after i moved there, and he was the guy who introduced jocelyn and i to many people who have become lifelong friends. paul was a soulful dude, and a sandbag artist without peer on some of the quincy quarry crimpfests. but most of all he was just a good guy.

Condolences.

We all have to be ever careful about climbing related accidents, but to be 71 and dying while climbing... at least doing it with his 'boots on,'

Cheers to him and all of those he left behind to carry on.

I'm sure Jerry has this one into the list.

I met paul in the 70's in the Gunks when the Boston crew would head down, seems he hung out a lot with Paul Niland and Al Rubin. The last time I saw him was in the Needles in the sometime in the early 90's when with my friend Howie Doyle.

He was a really cool fellow who just loved to climb. Really sad news.

Had the opportunity to climb with Paul many years ago in the Gunks and North Conway. Great guy. I showed up at the Gunks alone with a harness and shoes and we hooked up and he gave me the tour of many of the classics. Met me a few days later in North Conway and did the same thing at Cathedral and Whitehorse. It was my only climbing trip to the Northeast and he made it very memorable.

RIP Paul.

I wasn't sure if I posted this correctly, so I will try again. Our hearts and prayers go out to Karen and Paul's family. Paul was a wonderful person and an icon in the climbing community. To have made this kind of mistake, does not sound like Paul at all. We will always remember Paul with affection and love. Joe climbed a lot with him in the past, and we loved having him and Karen stay with us in NH. Our children, Shawn and Jen, also send their deepest sympathy. I guess they say that dying the way you loved to live is the best. But, Not dying for something you really love is much better. Paul, sweet dreams, we all love you and will miss you. Love to all, Barb and Joe, Shawn, Jen Landry

Horrendous. I had a very similar accident in the gunks two years ago, I came off the short end, but was only 25 ft above the deck. I told paul all about it, and he nodded his head and said, "you know frank, after all, this is a very dangerous game we play" But damn , he loved it. Two years after getting beat 95% to death he was leading 10's....and beating me at chess.I spent a good deal of time with him in the potrero, sitting at his cabin is one of the lovliest set of memories in my life. We did a fourpitch climb that magic ed just put up, and when we got done, , even a year latter, he just kept saying, that was such a nice time. That, and the cresecent moon butress, that was so personal to him. He's my favorite guy.
