Fork lift hit a gas meter. Gas escaped, blew up a space heater.

I just renewed.

Bummer. Sad to see it happen period, but the holidays makes it all the worse for those guys.

Alpinist is the only decent climbing/mountaineering magazine. What a drag for this to happen to them. They deserve so much better karma for putting out such a superior product.

Man, for all those folks who collect all the back issues, hold on to them. They're going to be worth something now.

I have been buying them from my local climbing shop, but I just subscribed. Hopefully everyone's cash up front for the new year will help them get through this.

My copy of #22 hasn't arrived yet. I hope it's in the safe hands of Canada Post, in postal heaven on its way to me.

I covet all 23 issues. Read em again and again. I've been picking them up from REI. I just put in my order for a 3 year subscription.

Gots to do whats right.

I do hope their insurance will cover the damage, but just as importantly, I hope the increased premiums won't be too high for them to continue putting the book out.

BUMP

My set is complete except for 0, 1, 3, and 4. I've had a "pop up" on my computer for weeks reminding me to order them... oh well, just material stuff.

I want the magazine to survive however, so I'm going to try to buy a few calendars for Christmas presents, maybe renew my subscription (although I think I am current for another couple of years what with AAC membership bonuses, etc.). I really hope they can pull through this.

bump.

After being out today, I came back hoping there'd be more info on this fire - like, if anyone had been hurt. I sure hope not. Anyone know anything more than what's already been posted/linked?

I was pretty shocked to see it bumped off page one, with only one post after the one I made. And what has gotten the top spots instead? Threads on Lois, Lois, Lois.

I guess she isn't leaving after all. Even though it hurts others, as she said.

Well - it actually does hurt others, when news of one of our best publications in distress is lost from the front because of the drama surrounding this persona.

Why are people continuing to draw her in? Let her go, for christ's sake. Invite her to another forum that is more feasible. One where the drama threads don't push climbing threads off the front page within hours of posting. The bullshit threads DO take away from the quality of climbing-related information on this site - as others have often commented.

What a shame. And - I BEG people to please not obfuscate this thread with responses to the above, except as related to the Alpinist fire and publication. They're rhetorical statements.

I did a little search using "Kable News Company" + "fire" and got this link:

http://www.wickedlocal.com/rrstar/news/x118358354

It says there were 20 employees inside, and nobody was injured. That's good news.

Bad news is that the sprinkler system was turned off. That's really bad, insurance-wise, I'd think. EDIT: But I am guessing that Kable News Company and Alpinist magazine are separate entities, so maybe Alpinist won't be adversely affected.

Sucks. Still waiting for my new issue. Doesn't seem to matter whether I live in Alaska, Yos, or josh...I still get mine weeks after everyone else.
