By my count, 27, including the maybes. A good start. There are a few others who are too shy to post publicly, but will be there. As we have up to 100 places at Yellow Pines on the 25th, there's still room.

Now we just have to figure out what we're doing as a group. Camping at Yellow Pines on the 25th/26th, and a sushifest (or equivalent) and party on the evening of the 25th, seem set. Hopefully Chicken Skinner can post something about camping the other nights, and general arrangements for those helping at the Facelift (park admission, camping). Then there's possible pancake breakfasts one or more other mornings. Doing Facelift projects in smaller SuperTopo groups also makes sense. What else?

Chicken Skinner's report on camping:

Hello everybody,

The camping situation is as follows. September 25th we have the whole Yellow Pines Campground for 100 people. September 26-30 we have Yellow Pines sites A and B for 50 people. September 26-30 we have 6 sites in Camp 4 for 56 people though I don't have the site numbers yet. I should have this information soon.

If you are going to commit, email me and I will put you on the list and verify your site number. I need to have your name, which nights you want to stay, which campground you prefer, and how many in your party. I am going to be booking the sites, please make sure I have this information, it is a lot easier on me. The first people to do this will get the sites until they have filled up. My email is yager@inreach.com.

Lets hear it for Mighty Hiker. Thanks for your help Anders.

Now, or sometime very soon, may be a good time to finalize your plans. Arrange time off school or work, travel arrangements, and so on. Once you've done that, you can commit and confirm, plus you can contact Ken, and he can allocate you camping.

Assume that there'll be some sort of big SuperTopian (and wannabes) get together on the evening of Tuesday September 25th. It will help if a few key people are there early to organize. I'll probably get to the Valley the previous Sunday, or earlier.

I suggest that the other SuperTopo group event at the Facelift be a breakfast on Sunday September 30th. A chance for those who can only come for the weekend to get together with everyone, and for us all to recharge before the last day.

I'm totally open to other ideas, e.g. it sounds like we can camp together in groups for much of the time, though perhaps not a single large group - at least, as long as we're helping! :-) We can certainly do projects for Ken together - we probably have knowledge and skills that few of his volunteers will have. We can do other breakfasts. The important thing is to get together, help Ken but not complicate things for him, and have fun.

I draw the line at group calisthenics.

Gimme a break!?!?! Finalize plans!??!?!?!? Nooooooooooow?

I'll decide on some dates. I'll email ken. It'll be easy.

Thanks for the post, Anders.

Not sure how to do sushi on the 25th or beyond but we'll figure it out. It mostly takes money.

stzzo - really the only way to make it work for me is donations before hand. As many have probably noticed the location of the sushifests has not been disclosed for this reason. I obviously don't have this luxury but I'll just have to go for it and see what happens. I certiainly will bring in extra fish just in case. Worse case scenario is there's extra and we have to eat sushi two nights.

Perhaps one project would be for some climbers to hike to the base of the Half Dome cables, and clean up around and below that point. There must be a lot of stuff that people have dropped and thrown, although some knowledge of the location, and technical equipment and skills, would be needed. (Plus hard hats, and a spotter...)

Doug has a sound point. It is an enormous investment for him to put on a sushi event, of time for organization, and for materials. It can't be spur of the moment. It's very important that he recover his costs, and make something on top of it. We may need to set an amount payable for those interested in sushi, and a date for payment, then go from there. If there's enough interest, then those who've paid will eat. If there's any leftovers, others can. We can have BBQ apparatus to provide for those who just show up.

With luck, Ron, Brutus, and Nurse Ratchet will be there to help.

My guess is that we'd need 20 - 25 people to make sushi worth the effort.

I suspect we may have a fair number of people who just show up, and given that it may be simpler to just do a big BBQ.

The historical thread reminded me to post something - the Facelift will be another sort of SuperTopo campfire, but the real kind. We can get together and swap stories and lies, in person. weschrist can talk with some legends for real, and if he gets in some climbing, perhaps get a better understanding of what it's all about. Perhaps some of the legends will be there.

It would be fun to meet Fattrad, too - although Marquess of Queensbury rules may need to be used. :-) And LEB. And so many others, posters, lurkers, legends, wannabes.

You'd have fun, meet new and old friends, help with something important, spend time in the Valley, and maybe even get a bit of climbing.

Edit: WC can even, if he/she wants, do a bit of anchor replacement. Not sure if it would count as a Facelift project, but lots to do. Hand drill only, though. ;-(

News bulletin: Fattrad announced today that he would be participating in the Facelift. Well, to be exact, given his capitalistic tendencies, he will be making a contribution of capital to the Yosemite Climbing Association to supports its good work. He'll also be hiring substitutes to work on his behalf at the Facelift - he says hiring substitutes has helped the materially rich avoid service in every war the U.S. has ever fought, so why not the war on litter? Dafty's substitutes will the ones be wearing natty striped suits, and unusually heavy ankle jewellery.

There are rumours Daftrat will make a cameo appearance at the sushi/BBQ on the evening of the 25th, at which event he'll eat humble pie. A raffle will be held to determine those who'll help him eat - as it will be low calorie filling, even 17 helpings should only temporarily derail his diet. The raffle is expected to be quite successful.

Rumours of appearances by weschrist and LEB remain unconfirmed.

Bump.

SOMETIME VERY SOON - SAY BY TONIGHT - WOULD BE A VERY GOOD TIME TO LET KEN KNOW WHETHER YOU CAN ATTEND THE FACELIFT, AND WHEN. Especially if you hope for a Facelift volunteer campsite.

Also, if you're attending the SuperTopo get together on evening of the 25th, at Yellow Pines, please confirm with both Ken and me.

Please don't leave this until the last minute, if you can possibly avoid it. Ken has an immense amount of coordinating and organizing to do in the next two months. Volunteer management - kids, adults, etc. Logistics - litter sticks, bags, projects, safety, and so on. Refreshments. Prizes. Speakers. Sponsors and NPS and Delaware North. And on and on. The simpler we can keep it the better - we need to help Ken, not add to his load.

Likewise for the 25th, and perhaps a pancake breakfast on the morning of the 30th - the sooner we know who'll be there, the easier it will be to plan.

Ken (Chicken Skinner) is at yager(at)inreach.com, and I'm at aiourom(at)telus.net, or (604) 228-1798.

Thanks!

While I can't provide an answer to the facelift today, as I have a tentative shoot during that time, you can put me down as a maybe, with me providing my own lodging.

Can you provide a link here, also, to the SuperTaco gathering so that people coming here may find it...

Cheers!

somehow i missed this before now- but i am in, and i know a few ST lurkers who will undoubtedly be in too. i especially like the end of summer clean-up date, so we who are around get to enjoy the cleaner park all through the fall.

Sorry - the original thread is at http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=407002&msg=411868#msg411868

A brief synopsis:

1. This year's Yosemite Facelift is September 26th - 30th. It's a lot of fun - clean up, projects, socials, speakers, food, prizes, old and new friends, etc.
2. Those helping with the Facelift can probably have free camping, either at Camp 4 or Yellow Pines, from the 26th onward. Possibly also free admission to the park. IT MUST BE ARRANGED IN ADVANCE!
3. It would be fun to have a SuperTopo get together at the Facelift, both to help out Ken, and because the Valley is the "heart" of SuperTopia. Climbers have a lot of helpful knowledge, skill and experience.
4. There is something planned for every night of the Facelift, from the 26th onward.
5. We're planning a SuperTopo get together on the evening of the 25th, at Yellow Pines group campground, near the base of the trail to Glacier Point. Yellow Pines has four sites, each with room for 25. The get together would include either sushi or a BBQ (TBA), fun, a campfire, tall tales, and a chance to meet the other inmates of SuperTopia. There are possibilities of a speaker or show at the village, though that would involve shifting location, and some arranging.
6. We're also thinking of a SuperTopo pancake breakfast on the morning of the 30th, a chance for everyone to recharge before the last day's projects.

There are lots of different things to do to help with the Facelift, from walking all the roads and trails in the park and collecting nearby garbage, to removing post-industrial remains, to simply climbing for a day, but ensuring your area gets a good clean up. Whatever you do, it's fun.

I am working on the evening programs and this is what I have come up with.

Wednesday September 26th at 7:00pm : Tom Frost will host a showing of Sentinel, the West Face. Yosemite Lodge Amphitheater.

Thursday September 27th at 7:00pm : Reel Rock Film Tour featuring King Lines starring Chris Sharma. Yosemite Lodge Amphitheater.

Friday September 28th at 7:00pm : Tim O'Neil presentation. East Auditorium.

Saturday September 29th at 6:30pm : Tommy Caldwell presentation. East Auditorium.
There is an Octoberfest party at the El Portal Community Hall the same evening and I scheduled Tommy's show early enough to do both.

Sunday September 30th at 6:00pm : Party for the participants including free food, free beer and wine, raffle, and live music from the Joe Paquin Band. East Auditorium.

Hi Taco fans!
I'm in for the Tuesday night dinner/party. I'm also in for working Wednesday. Hopefully we'll be given something as fun to do as last years cleaning of the pink spots in the Gunsite.
Nature, I hope it works to do some sushi. I'm willing to pay somewhat more than my share up front, weather I get reimbursed or not.
I can bring an extra barbeque. Maybe some sort of sushi first course and BBQ second course makes sense.
Looking forward to meeting you all.

If you all decide on a BBQ, I will check on borrowing the local Rotary Club grill which is giant. It takes a truck to tow it. It should be more than adequate and I will pay for the charcoal or supply the wood depending on what you all want to do.

Hi All,

I have booked the plane tickets, and am coming from Switzerland! Will be arriving Monday 25th - Ken has booked a site in Yellow Pines for my wife and I.

We will definitely be at the event Tuesday night - sushi would be great!

Nature, I can understand that getting the money is essential (I have been in a similar situation)... If there is a way I can get it to you before the event, just let me know.

Looking forward to meeting y'all!

Fishy Pete.

Sounds like a good thing. I want to be there but I will be in school and so I can't commit. I will work on my own lodging if I screw myself out of a campsite.

Nature, I would be more than happy to pay for sushi in advance to make the sushi-thing happen. Just make sure there's enough of that Orgasmic Eel you were cooking up at night! Mmmmmm! I'll be the first one at the table once I smell that cooking!!!

ditto! i don't know yet what day i can go... but you can count me out of the sushi - i tried some fish in tuolumne and learned i don't like it... my cousins are still teasing me about the expression on my face when i took a bite of my cousin's trout.

i was thinking about the facelift and wishing tacoheads were in tuolumne while i was there. i'm so looking forward to this event :)

Anders, do you have any idea how many people are interested in the sushi? I'm trying to decide what the price should be to make it worth my while. After adding up the finances from the last sushifest that just ended and estimating that I spent more on supplies than I was paid I'm now caught between wanting to make it happen and not wanting to take it in the wallet to make it happen. Maybe email me and let me know when you can?

Edit: maybe this will help with the idea of sushi and who's really in. The price will be $30 minimum and there needs to be a minimum number of people (probably something like 40). Otherwise I may have to pull out of the event.
