I have constructed a non-commercial website containing several of my articles and pictures appearing in publications of the Sierra Club, American Alpine Club, Climbing, Mountain, Summit and other sources. See tomhiggins.net.

For those with long memories and a historical bent, here are articles on first ascents, reflections on trends and changing styles, tributes to period characters and climbers past, fiction, climbing tips, selected postings to rock climbing sites and dialog (as time permits) with e-mailers to the site.

For those unfamiliar with my climbs or articles, I have first and first free ascents of possible interest beginning in the 1960s, especially on the cliffs of Yosemite, Tahquitz Rock, Sierra peaks and domes, Pinnacles National Monument and Needles of South Dakota.

Cool Tom! Thanks for sharing.
Bob Kamps looks just like Tommy Lee Jones in your photo, except craggier.

Thanks for sharing. I had been wanting to read Anti-Climbing at Pinnacles for a long time, and finally got to read it! Very nice; it definitely captures a lot of the feelings of climbing at Pinnacles.

Looking awfully good, folks.

I do wonder if Roger, Werner and all the other blokes in that cabal thought this was the way it was going to go? Did you know beforehand?

Cheers,

This is great to see TH. It's a well-organized site, friendly and unique. And fills in part of the Climbing Story not familiar to many.

Thanks loads, Peter Haan

An excellent site!

I wonder if yours was the first (artificial) crack machine?

I did the Peanut in spring 1977, with Scott Flavelle. We climbed lots of slabs in those days, in Squamish and the Valley, but found it pretty adventurous..

Great site Tom!
I was moved by your tribute poem for RD, and look forward to re-reading your style commentaries.

Was in Berkeley last friday and thought of you when I did "The Snatch". Your smooth style on that and many other classic problems will always be an inspiration for those of us lucky enough to have watched you glide up the stone.

One of the highlight memories of my teenage years was doing an early repeat of Piece de Resistance after reading your Ascent article so many times.

Lets get together next time you come up to the summit to visit Frank Sarnquist, (who I see every snowy Sunday at the nordic ski races).

Warm regards,

Peter Mayfield

Thanks Tom - esp. for the story of Sahib. Peered up in awe at that face for the first time this spring. Now to climb it!

Hi, Tom--

I buzzed through your site and was happy to see a pic of the Peanut. I remember years ago a bunch of us from Tahquitz humping up there to do that route because you had done the first--and if you were from Tahquitz you had to do all the Valley face routes--it was a matter of pride.

Nice memories . . .

Have to add: Tom Higgins and Tom Patey were never seen in the same room together, so what can we conclude?

Tom H. btw is one of the funniest partners EVER to have been on stone. If only he were smart, imagine what might have been. He is so funny, canny and sharp that it is actually hard to stay on the the rock in his presence. Like Kamps, he climbs and sees his climb, his way, powerfully.
