ha, amazing...
Bela Lugosi's been a study of mine lately.

his rise and fall from the A list to his work
with Ed Wood.

quite a story, how could "Dracula" have fallen
and his "franchise" gone mainstream?

its kind of touching and very human.

thanks for the post, apogee.

Its an oft repeated story Ray.

Made it big in Dracula (and he paid his dues for THAT one), but then he lived too richly, got into debt, refused an essentially non-speaking role in Frankenstein (which Boris Karloff made big) and ended up settling for crap roles.
The morphine didn't help either.

And married five times!

Dood was a vampire! A rather rich vampire. Think about it! He cuda just flitted around the neighborhood sucking blood for free. But he went with the moral majority way (purdy sure he was a repuglikin) and married each of them. Knott saying that he didn't "flit" around, or whatever, now & then, cuz afterall, dood WAS a vampire! Matter a fakt, cud be flitting around somewhere tonight! Nahmean?

edit: Cosmic - Bro, must say, I have had my suspicion's! YIKES! LOL

Another guy I worked with in the 80s actually grew up next door to the Lugosis in the San Fernando Valley. He said the old man was pretty strange.

I grew up with Greg Lugosi (Bela's grandson) in La Canada. His family was fine. No particular weirdness I was ever witness to, and I spent a good amount of time with them. Dad had a tricked out '65 Fastback Mustang with the license plate "DRAQLA". Lost touch when I moved away.
