I just started shopping ebay. But, I only buy real good deals. Where I save 70% or I will not buy.

My question is were does all this "new" old stuff come from. I mean gear that was new when I started climbing some 29 years ago is up for sale. Where does this stuff come from?

I have always checked out used gear sales and know what stuff is worth to me. But, I feel like I am in a time warp with some of this gear.

Pay attention to their feed back, be cautious about gear because you can see or test before you can buy, and be careful because it can be addicting

I didn't have any use for it, no respectable climber would. Wait... are there any respectable climbers???

Send some for the Alaskan Alpine Club HQ decor. The locals use their old gear for climbing, then for every imaginable lash-up jerry-rigged good-idea outdoor adventure or house-building, vehicle repair, Chitina dipnetting, new invention thing you can imagine.

We got one old MSR ice axe after somebody finally stopped using it for digging potatoes from his frozen garden each winter. It is a little bent.

Big Piton,
Lotta people looking to generate money, especially during these times.
The bad thing about selling right now on Ebay is there's not as many buyers/bidders as 18 months ago.

Big P,

It is unlikely that any of the climbing stuff is stolen as it is so cheap anyway so the assumption of the thread so far that there are a lot of garages out there is probably precise. And there are also a lot of former wannabees who finally weigh in at ebay with their stuff. You see plenty of portaledges btw.

However, elsewhere on ebay there clearly are items that are either knockoff, counterfeit fakes or in higher value items, perhaps in some cases stolen. I love ebay and have had over 500 transactions, only one of which ended as a no-show and by using resolution methods on ebay, you can be made whole again. Always use PayPal btw.

And make sure and use Auctionsniper. If you don't know what that is email me.

I was out yesterday doing some short aid routes on hooks I bought off ebay. He had them listed at Fifi's, I could tell by the pick they were BD Cliffhangers. Because they were listed as Fifi's they probably never cam up in many searches. His mistake was my gain. I got 2 of them for 12.00 and shipping was free. Hung on them all day yesterday and they are legit. I also picked up a couple drill bits got 2 for 99 cents. Search hard and know whet things are worth and you will find deals.

My giant Metolius haul bag was 50.00

BTW there is a hammer listed right now that is advertised as being Jim Bridwell's from back in the day.

I think Todd mentioned on a different thread that he was going to help Bridwell Ebay some items, including a hammer

It seems like a really cool item. Perhaps posting on here and giving a bit of the hammers route history would help. Seems like a good item to purchase and donate/put on loan to a museum.

Bridwell's stuff:

http://shop.ebay.com/jimbridwell09/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=

Lots of dudes get excited toproping, start getting a rack, and well stop there. Life, nerves, poor gear choices result in a closet full of new and near new get. My buddy calls his stash from numerous failed hobbies "The Closet of Shame".

I'm convinced only about 1 of every 4 portaledges make even a first summit, let alone a second one. Same with haulbags, pins, and bolting kits.
