How is the winter in Truckee? I dont ski, so I am asking more for the climbing...
1. Is there a gym there, close by?
2. Outside, to cold? How far to warm weather?
3. local comunity?
Thanks!

Truckee is my second home now, lived there for 2 years. Good climbing, skiing and fishing. Mtn. biking and road riding are also good. Very small bouldering gym downtown. Not sure if it's still open. You can sport climb at Big Chief almost all year round if you are willing to snowshoe or ski 1000' vertical. But winter has cross country, alpine touring and resort skiing. I would highly recommend trying all. Not too cold in winter, rarely below 10-20 degrees F at night. Daytime temps can be below freezing but this is rare, averaging 40-60 degrees F. Hope this helps.

Hmmm, I was hoping for at least a gym in town, or maybee someone has a woody? I dont have much of an MCL in my right knee, so the thought of even standing on skis and loosing 6 more months of climbing makes me sick to my stomach. (I hurt it skiing in the first place).
How about partners? is there much of a comunity? Thanks again!

Truckee is great. Everything is relative there, and it depends where you are moving from. I lived in Reno for a few years and in Truckee for a few more. The climbing is great and there is a huge community in Reno/Truckee.

Truckee is great, but I can't imagine living there and not skiing.

It is really, really cold in winter. Really cold. And in a lot of winters, a lot of snow falls, which means you are going to be shoveling / blowing a lot of snow. All of which is fine if you are a skier and snow excites you, but if not, it is just a huge pain in the neck. Also, you'll be dealing with all the skier traffic and generally idiotic tourist behavior for the whole winter.

There is not very good access to any winter climbing. What is close by - Bishop? 4 hours. The Valley? At least 4 hours in winter. Sugarloaf? When the weather is good, that is still a 2 hour drive, and I don't think Sugarloaf is going to be very exciting after the first 4 or 5 trips. I don't think I am forgetting anyplace else....Even if the little bouldering gym in the Sports Xchange is still open, that would not be enough to feed the rat for the months from Nov-Apr.

I considered living in Truckee and I still think I would be happy there, if the right job situation came along and I thought I could afford to buy or pay really high rent. I prefer Bishop - better small town feel, easy to get around on a bike or on foot, and little if any snow to shovel - but we are missing out on good restaurants and music here, and it is a really long way to an airport. But I really like skiing and would be willing to give up climbing for the winter.

Of course you could strengthen up that knee.....there are some other Truckee locals that post on here frequently, maybe one of them will chime in with more beta. There is definitely a great community of outdoor adventure folk up there, including lots of great climbing partners; and you might find someone with a nice home wall, although I would not count on it being big - few climbers have the kind of $$ to afford a house that can fit a big home wall, and an outdoor wall would not work with the winter weather around there.

Truckee ranger station data says that they get 204 inches of snow a year. That is 17 feet. Lots of shoveling for someone who doesn't ski. Don't know exactly what elevation the ranger station is in relationship to the town.

it's ALL about snow removal.. neighbors fight over where it gets moved.. I 80 closes regularly..You cannot drive around the lake as the road closes for avalanche... The good ice climbing is over on the other side of the lake..
skier??? snowboarder?? that's why people live there.

i had a ski injury mcl tear and with a very focused rehab i'm back on it 100 percent climbing skiing etc.. don't give up

I love it here, great community, last year moved from Truckee up to the Serene Lakes neighborhood at Donner Summit, but still only 13 minutes away from town. Bouldering gym at Sports XChange is pretty good, a new gym opened in Incline which I have not checked out, since I don't really climb in gyms, but people say it is very good. There is supposed to be some good bouldering north of Reno, up by Gerlach, a couple of hours away, most climbers here drive down to Bishop regularly in the winter to climb.

If your knee could take xc track skiing, this is one of the best places in the world to do that, then you would appreciate the high snowfall!

Dmalloy< Pink< and Moosie are correct on the snow removal thing. It's a constant struggle to keep up if you are doing it alone. { without a snowremoval contract} Getting to work on time means an alpine start on powder days, unless of course you have a powder clause agreement.

I've been here 20yrs. I'm not sure what it is but the last couple have been a real struggle not to be disgusted buy the onslaught of tourists. Every weekend the ebb and flow of tourists gets old. Everybody wants a piece. I love Truckee, I just wish it would take a step back. When ya'll visit, breathe. It's not a race. End of Rant.

Maysho is right on with the ski skate thing being a good alternative for you, keeps you fit and doesn't stress the body like downhill skiing. Just look at that guy, sheesh. ONE FIT MOFO. Welcome back Peter, looks like T-land was awesome.

I've said this hundreds of times. I'd like to think I have travelled somewhat. Everytime I return home to Truckee, I realize how blessed I am to live Here. End of Rant.

Climbing during the winter, someone mentioned Big Chief, that place is'nt even that good during the summer why would you hike up there in the winter? Not totally true. The place does dry out and I have made it a point to go up there once a year during the winter. Peter mentioned Gerlach...Pergatory. Super Super good. Lots of potential.
I've climbed at Road Cut two days after storms when I was really jonesing. Star Wall is a sheltered oasis during the winter and gets full sun at times. The Sports Exchange has a gym that could use some updating. The gym in Incline however is great. Expensive but fun.

Truckee is great. Too bad houses got so expensive. You can climb most months, but snow at the base is the challenge. 1 hour to warm weather. If we get climbing allowed in Auburn then it will be 1 hour to winter climbing. Community is great. Stay in on Friday and Saturday and Sunday nights.

But as said climbing is better in other places. Truckee is very hard to beat if you ski and climb though.

I lived right at the base of the hill leading up to Big Chief for one winter. We used to shoe / ski up there all the time. When the sun is shining, you can get a good 5 hours of climbing there on a winter's day. Past that, you can climb some things at donner on a sunny day, but you will be standing around on snow. Bring a tarp.

Tacos Jalisco is the ONLY reason for coming here if you do not ride or ski.

This week marked my 1 year in Truckee. Although there was a few days when I woke up to a shitload of snow, the temperatures were pretty mild all winter... I'm from Wisconsin though. I take I80 to reno for school and used chains maybe 3 times throughout the winter. Places to live are super expensive, the vacation-home-owners are annoying, but lots to do nearby and there is someplace awesome within a few hour drive in any almost direction.

I totally forgot about those. Ate there after climbing all the time. I swear to God my mouth is watering right now.

Sometimes I regret moving away...

" Tacos Jalisco is the ONLY reason for coming here if you do not ride or ski."

Well I wouldn't go that far, though they do serve some good grub.
If you don't ski- Truckee in the winter in my opinion would be very tough. You got to love snow to live there in the winter, and for that it's killer.
So learn to ski or board but be fore-warned.

There is as mentioned great day hiking, jumping off points for backpacking, fishing, boating (rafting/kayaking), 2 disc golf courses, PCT is close, Reno is close for dinners, movies, shopping, gambling, etc... Sacramento is close too.

Couple hours to most places in the north state, and a few more to most East Side outings. As Maysho mentioned a couple options for indoor plastic pulling.
Also, the weather is pretty darn nice during the hot days of summer unlike the heat elsewhere in the state...

I'd live there full time if I could, but unfortunately at this point in life I can't, but I spend as much time there as I can (having a home there).
Oh, there are some super nice folks too. Community is what you make of it.

Why are you considering Truckee - job? Relationship?

Bishop, Tucson, Vegas area, Texas, El Portal all have tons of rock and climbable weather.
