This is an intial “Save the Date” announcement for the public memorial in the High Country for our Beloved “Brutus of Wyde” Bruce Bindner.

It’s going to be the weekend of August 29th and 30th at the Stonehouse (asharma) in Tuttle Creek Canyon, with other events in the Alabama Hills to be announced.

I don’t have details yet about all that will happen. I’ll be doin’ some preacherin’ for the event it seems. I can only imagine that Brutus would want us to create some broad smiles and laughter between a few tears. It’s going to be at least informal if not rip-roarin’

Let's remember our bro, raise a toast, get together and maybe climb something...

Here’s a link to info about the Stonehouse

http://www.merrell-wolff.org/ashram.htm

and a Brutus Trip report that references it

http://www.summitpost.org/trip-report/169980/Windhorse-First-Ascent-Lone-Pine-Peak.html

More as it comes. Em didn’t want to do RSVPs or head counts but perhaps getting some travel plans and ideas swirling will keep this thread bumped enough for folks to see it.

Peace

Karlee (Brutus called me that back in Rec.climbing days)

I'll see what I can do. I'm overdue to visit Deep Springs (I'm an alum) so it could all go together.

I'm gonna try to make it! I loved this guy!

The last time I saw him was a few weeks before his passing away. He let me borrow his swivel for our planned ascent of the nose...I then proceeded to lose it in the move that my girlfriend and I did just a few days after that. When I emailed him about what happened, he generously offered to wait until I found it. What a generous man! You know the thing that impressed me the most about him was that he seemed to have his priorities straight...

And then off to Burning Man...where I plan to put some words and pictures of his in the temple...

No goal but the path, Hamid.

Brutus knew the "Cremation of Sam McGee" by heart.

You can hear it here

http://www.robertwservice.com/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=831

Em likes the Robert Tree version for the emotion but the Burgess Merideth version is easier to follow

I talked with Em about that on a roadtrip just the other day. My dad knew that one (The cremation of Sam Mcgee) by heart, and we kids always loved it when he would trot it out. I can do the gist, but would have to practice to deliver it like Bruce, no doubt, did!

I can close my eyes and see his expression during the recitation.

I hope I can come.

I've known and admired Bruce a long time, but I didn't know him well like many of you did. My last memory of him was earlier this year at Planet Granite in San Francisco. They have a two-sided offwidth there, and a climber on one opening of the crack could reach through and touch a climber on the other opening. Bruce could practically float up this thing, but I could only struggle part way. I was in the side towards the street and windows, and he was in the side towards the lockers. He reached through and took my hand so I could lean back and make some progress. We both got a laugh out of it.

I also remember him doing a flagpole last year in one of Zander's artificial cracks. Since you're pushing with the lower hand, there's a lot of pulling force on the upper hand in a flagpole pose, and Bruce had a stout build, but he was able to extend into a flagpole with both hands jammed in the crack.

The Bachar Memorial reminded me once again the power that bringing our tribe together can bring.

So Brutus deserves a bump so you can save the date
