I would say the marine chronometer had a bigger effect. Its invention in 1750 enabled the British to create their trade and naval hegemony.

There's a pretty good book on the subject of the problem the naval chronometer solved. Well, okay, there are probably dozens of books on that subject, but I liked this one.
