Ok.... got a cable modem with a linksys wireless router blah blah blah......
All Macs all the time. Wireless, ethernet, guests, all just hook up and work with no effort. Now I need to hook up a POS PC to this network via ethernet. Got the cable, got the slot on the router, plug it into the PC..... a light flashes on the port on the PC.... packets are being sent and received. It says I am hooked up. But, I'm not. All browser efforts end with a page not found generic error.
Facts:
it is not a case of turning on and off the modem, router, PC, hub etc. All have had many restarts.
PC is a fairly modern one with XP, not the albatross of Vista.
Cable is good as it will launch any internet page on yet another Mac at will.
Have crawled around in the PC control panel and whatever their version of Network Tools is... hit "repair" a few dozen times..... removed any password protection, and firewalls. Clicked on all boxes that said "automatically configure" for type of connection.
Have plugged the POS PC directly into the cable modem, bypassing all routers and BS. Same story.
PC is working fine and it is not a hardware issue. This scenario has played out on 3 PC's so far.
Gawd! the PC experience is unelegant.
Used the extremely lame "wizard" that for the most part don't know 'nuthin.
Any ideas? Are there any PC guys left on this board? Even Obama uses a Mac......

oh wait... don't do that. She just switched to a Mac (after 15+ years on a PC) and is a much happier camper

First thing...
Open up a Command Prompt window
Start -> Run
type: 'cmd' (without the quotes) into the box, hit return
Once the Command Prompt window is up, type this at the prompt:
ipconfig -all
Then hit return. Let us know what it spits out.

I did that and it erased everything on the hard drive...... Man! I got TROLLED!!!!!

Make sure your Default Gateway of your router is set correctly.
Static your PC network address and your gateway to your PC/Mac and don't use DCHP for that connection.
Example:
IP address 192.168.1.57
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.254
Preferred DNS can be 192.168.1.254 also

here is what it said:
Ethernet adapter local area connection:
connect specific DNS suffix: dc.rr.com (roadrunner is my provider)
ip address: 192.168.1.104 (router is 192.168.1.1 by default)
subnet: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.1.1
it is a DCHP connection as far as I know

Is your router assigning a dynamic ip address?
If so give your pc a static address as I've given above.
Again STATIC address your PC/MAC computer and see if it's resolved.
Also try and change the Preferred DNS to 192.168.1.1 to see if that resolves the gateway from not coming thru.

No DNS server listed in the output? That's probably the issue.
I'd try to ping an ip address next, in the command window, try this (74.125.19.103 is one of google's machines):
ping 74.125.19.103
If that succeeds, the DNS is the issue.

It would also be helpful to know if you can see the other workstations on your network. As others have said, based on what you've posted, this seems to be a DNS issue. As Werner stated, set your PC to a static IP and your DG (Default Gateway) and DNS to 192.168.1.1
You're not having a PC issue, dude. You're having a network issue. hahaha

IF no DNS is the issue then Russ should be able to use, for instance - 72.249.127.27 in a IE window and it'll open the Sound Solution site - black background.
But Werner is probably right...

it is asking for the Static DNS1. What should I put i there and then how long before the 6 macs on this network find out somebody stole their bone?

Do like froodish recommends. froodish knows his/her shite. From a DOS prompt (“Command Window”) type
C:> ipconfig all
And post up the output.
This is precisely what a real water cooled brain actual geek would do. And with that output, such a stud geek as froodish will know precisely what is amiss and how to fix it. Follow froodish, Mien Fuhrer! Ack! I can valk!….

Just for laughs, I’m going to guess that froodish will walk you through [Settings] [Control Panel] – then perhaps to either [Add Hardware] or [Network Setup] if your PC hasn’t yet been told it has a WiFi NIC (wireless network card) – or perhaps directly into [Internet Options] [Connections] and [LAN Settings] wherein you can convince your moron PC (all PC’s are morons) where to look for “mommy’s teat”.
Just wondering if what I once knew is still valid. For as you quick found out, I once prostituted myself in this venue, among all the others. Anything for a buck, to soon convert into endless Nrupees and be outta here – and off to ‘there’.

Does the router have some sort of MAC address filtration that is preventing the PC from seeing the modem?
That would account for packets being exchanged, but no access to the internet.

OK... are PC's more forgiving on all that static IP crap and the rest of the hoops if they try to connect via wireless? Like in if I popped a wireless deal-e-o into the asss end of that machine, would it just link the fuk up already?
ALL I WANT TO DO IS SEE A GOT-DAMN WEB PAGE LIKE THE REST OF YOU GUYS IN PC LAND. ONE WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE A SIMPLE THING. BILL GATES IS GETTING NO REACH-AROUND FROM ME!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111999999
