So, we've probably all been here before. Last summer, I had an awesome time living and working in Tuolumne and, later in the season, in the small town at the base of Tioga Pass, Lee Vining. I totally fell in love with the climbing in that area and am pretty convinced it doesn't get much better between Tuolumne, all the Eastside stuff, the high Sierra, and the Valley. I have the opportunity to go back there again, but currently I'm in Bozeman, MT skiing almost every day of the week and generally having a blast hanging out with all my old friends from early college days. Made me remember what an awesome community Bozeman is, how many friends I have here, the good things a larger university can do to a town, etc...
Basically, I've also found some pretty promising summer leads out here that would keep with my seasonal employment stratagem (i.e. ~2.5 months off at the end of each peak season). So my question is this: Should I sacrifice the opportunity of being surrounded by the most amazing rock in the world for life in a bit of a more diverse community?
Obviously I know the choice is mine, but I'm looking for any feedback from those out there who've made similar decisions in the past.

Twenty years ago I was a carpenter in Auburn Ca. got a chance to move to Hawaii.

I thought to myself ,, Am I just going to stay in this same town forever, or go to a new, better place,,, I went.

Bozeman is a great community, super skiing and enough rock to keep you busy for a life time. TM will always be there, just a little more crowded each year. If I had to do it all over again being 2009 I'd get on with life in Bozeman......Berg Heil!

If you move to Californicate and ever plan on making any amount of money be prepared to give a higher percentage of it to the scum bags in Excramento than any other state in the nation! I'm outta here ASAP. My opinion is highly colored by being a small business owner, your results may vary. I have to say Montana looks good to me.

Haha thanks for the replies everyone. I have to say I savored the ice of Hyalite for a couple of seasons before I gave it up for ski mountaineering pursuits, of which there also also ample amounts here. But likewise in the Sierra...

Reilly, you pretty much nailed it. I too am looking to flee the place I love .... CA is going down....it's sad and I am not a negative person but this next year will include the ending of many business's here....big and small. Two Thirds of the business's in our place have already shut their doors.

If anyone from Sacramento is out there....Please cut back all the taxes. If yo don't pretty soon there will be no one to tax. Then, you will have anarchy because you will have no money to give to the many that don't work but get checks and entitlements every month. Very Serious Here, LRL

Lynne,
It pains me to say it as I lived here in the early 60's; the air wasn't so good but everything else was da bomb! The 'Upper Eastside' isn't too messed up yet but they are still at the mercy of the Excramentoads. California, a great place to visit!

Alpinerock, sorry to 'borrow' your thread, but you did ask.

Sounds like you can win either way.

Not to pile on Cali, but I grew up there, spent nearly 30 years there, then moved North 12 years ago. I definately miss YNP and the sierras, but I've managed to keep entertained in the outdoors, and found a place I could afford to a family of 5 on a single income.

But I can understand wanderlust. Not sure if it's the midlife thing, but I'm seriously looking at working overseas for a few years. If the right gig comes out, we'll be off to foreign lands.
