Attention SoCallers
Any of you interested in the history of our beloved Ditch or photography should beat feet to the Getty Museum and take in the Carleton Watkins exhibit. It is extensive and fascinating. He took over a thousand "mammoth plate" photographs, not all of the Valley. If you don't know what that is in a nutshell the camera's dimensions are about 20" W x 24" H x 36" L and built of Honduran mahogany! Not exactly a point and shoot. I put it at a good 100 lbs! On top of that, to lug it up to some of the places he did would have taken at least 4 people. In addition to the camera you had to take your whole dark room along! The 'film' was the size of the finished photograph so most of the photographs are about 14" x 18".

I was going to append this to Largo's 'Humility' thread in that Watkin's life was a lesson in such. He arose from nothing, became one of the greatest photographers, hung with all sorts of famous people, made a ton of money, saw his whole studio and 'negative' archive go up in the flames caused by the San Francisco Earthquake, and died a pauper in a state hopital. Ashes to ashes, if you will...

Beat Feet! It runs until 1 March...[\b]

Yeah, I know the feeling.

After everything put together IMAX weighs in close to 300 lbs.

Drag all that sh'it around all over the world and on walls it just about killed me.
