Does anyone know of any good climbs along backpacking trails?
I want to take a 3-4 day hike but include some climbing along the way. Any ideas?

Endless good opportunities.

You'll get better answers if you state your climbing level and geographic area.

I live in MO, within an hour of many parts of the Ozark Trail, and within an hour of st.louis.
I'm about a 5.8-5.9 climber. But I still enjoy blasting up easier routes too.
Since this would be a backpacking trip I wouldn't mind just toproping some rarely used rocks and flying some eaisier routes

The first place I'd go is Lambert airport. Then choose a destination other than MO. (You can also start by getting in your car and driving about six hours to KY, TN, or No. Arkansas). Either of these first steps will open up a lot more options for you. At least that is how I did it when I was there. Good luck!

The Black Elk Wilderness area in the Black Hills has more than enough miles of hiking trails and climbing to keep you busy for many days. You could spends days in just the Elkhorn or upper Grizzly creek areas alone.

Second thought, nothing there, never mind.

Ozark trail is a great backpacking trail and it is almost perfect weather to do some of it, just keep an eye on our Misery weather and bring a sleeping bag, spring it is muddy, summer there are mosquitoes and poison ivy galore. But pretty low on climbing, sure you will find some bouldering along the ozark trail. Ya got to get out of this state if ya want back country climbing. Our climbing here is quite limited to MO river and lake bluffs, if ya hadn't noticed.

Ya got to get out of this state.

This time of year I might recommend Arizona to you, hear cochise is good weather here before too long, even a backcountry climbing book on AZ if you can find it and afford it...

Oh and by the way I quit backpacking because it got boring then took up climbing and mtb...

Edit: don't think AR has what you are looking for either, although some of the best climbing around!!!! a three day backpacking trip with climbing in norther AR? haven't heard of it at least. you got beta crimpergirl?

Oh and if I remember right the current river section of the ozark trail had a couple real small bluffs, nothing I would waste my time getting to though.

I guess I just haven't ever backpacked in AR, just hit sams throne, HCR, mount mag, etc., but I'd say it could be posible around the bufflo national riverway, I think that is the right name for the national park. could be a fun trip, the area is pretty amazing

edit: maybe a padling trip? or a trail in the NP?

Paddling on the Buffalo is awesome. Great fishin', too.
Good crags are accessable from the river, but some are terrible choss, also. Pick & choose, as always, eh?

So, In northern Arkansas, the 165 mile Ozark Highlands Trail (some day to be connected to the Ozark Trail in MO. to create the trans-ozark trail) passes within a mile or so of several established climbing areas, including: Shepherd Springs, DeSoto Boulders, Spy Rock, Bee Rock, Herrods Creek, Haw Creek Falls, Stack Rock, and White Rock Mountain (but climbing is now prohibited at White Rock).

Not to mention the thousands of large boulders scattered along the length of the trail.

Guidebooks for the climbing areas and the OHT are readily available locally, and over at rc.com.

Babycalves, if you can travel I'd like to suggest getting out away from home. Last year I went up to BC on a backpacking trip and found this. Nice little chunk of stone,EH.

Should yeild a nice adventure or two. Then the wife and I went to the Tetons and found this chunk of rock, and the view was right from our tent. I'm sure a small rack and a rope would yeild some pretty good back country adventure climbing.

And this was where we were stuck sleeping for the night.

And the hike and views weren't too bad to take either.

But the Sierra's views from half dome in 05 were hard to compete with. Behind me is clouds rest, and to the south of that is a trail leading up the Merced river that had enough domes, slab, and cracks to keep a team of FA nuts 100 strong busy for ten lifetimes. No joke.

The point is there is more than a guys backyard out there to be hiked, climbed, and fallen in love with. Diversify, get out, and never leave the rope out of the gear list. This continent has more adventure than I can get done in my lifetime, within the lower 48. Get a book, get a partner, get going, it's waiting.

Babycalves - I can't help as much with the backpacking part. Problem with the little bit of climbing near STL is that most of it is on private property. I have heard that closer to KCMO there is some fun stuff. Hit up Dogfather for more info on that.

If you want to know some relatively close places to go with some FUN climbing, these are my suggestions...

1. Southern Illinois- Jackson Falls. Not sure there is great backpacking there, but there is free camping and some fun climbing. Only problem is that the climbing does start in the 5.10. At least worth going there and hiking around to check it out.

2. The Red River Gorge, Kentucky. Most fun sport climbing anywhere I think. :) Plus, there are many walls that offer easier climbing if that is what you want. Go to their website - they have an excellent online search engine/guidebook that will allow you to search based on criteria. Given the territory, there must be some fun hiking there. http://www.redriverclimbing.com/

3. Tennessee! King's Bluff is FUN limestone climbing. Single pitch on the Tennessee River. It is aptly described as "stacked boulder problems." And it has a grueling 2 minute approach.

Further east, toward the rocking town of Chattanooga is Foster Falls. Beautiful. Fun fun fun! There must be hiking out here too. Anyone? Really lots of fun destinations especially in eastern TN. Get the Dixie Cragger's Atlas for more information. Or hit the Southeast climbers coalition website: http://www.seclimbers.org/

4. Horse shoe canyon in Northern Arkansas is fun too. And I liked Sam's Throne as well. However, for whatever reason, my car generally pointed east toward KY and TN when I fled from STL at every possible opportunity.

All in all, there isn't much in the MO region. Sorry. But hey, flights are really cheap these days! Good luck.

edit: Check out Navin's post above. He seems to have a lot of good information. Good luck again!

Tuolumne Meadows for one.

How about the Rey Lakes Trail? You go right past the Bubbs Creek wall, and Charlotte Dome is right behind that.
