So it is time for a winter beach trip

Now the saltwater fly-fishing will be a major plus. It is one of the few things that suck in Colorado.
I was wondering how about climbing in Nicaragua?
Anyone know of climbing in Nica?
When I Goggled I found a site. So I hit the climbing site and found

Sorry, at this moment there are no guides listed here. If you are a Rock Climbing Guide

Another site I did not go to.
Rock Climbing and Bouldering – Nicaragua ...This site may harm your computer.

I really was not looking for a guide but it may be the only way to get a partner.

Still looking just thought I would throw it out and see what STers may know.

I spent a month travelling through Nicaraqua in 1986 and can't recall seeing much in the way of climbable stone. Lots of volcanic activity in that part of the world so I would expect to find some basalt flows at the minimum. Wonderful people!

There is some good bouldering near Matagalpa and some good size walls near Somoto (grand canyon of Nicaragua) when I went into the canyon it was raining and just when swimming.

Hi Richard!

If you saw a post on rock climbing in Nicaragua maybe
it was about its inexistence... I never heard of any.
Have a nice trip to Nicaragua!

Cheers

Thanks Bob
Now I have locations to pinpoint and places to go.

I worked in Nicaragua for a month. Saw some interesting ruins to "buider" on, if you are really itching for some climbing. No rock, wonderful people.

It's the third largest lake in the America's and has... I think the largest inland (Ometempe) island in the world.

Bang for the buck I think Nicaragua can be rated pretty high.

I thought it was an impressive lake. Never did see it. As I recall it is a windsurfers paradise?

OK
So climbing was never the point of this trip

It always nice to sneak in some rock on the wife’s beach trip...
But throw in some deep (I hope) water soloing

Were getting closer

Hey Richard,
So Somoto canyon is a nice long canyon with a good
amount of water during the wet season, possibly even
some free'water solo'ing opportunities. I hear it is
decent rock for climbing, but I havent actually been
out there.

I live in Matagalpa and I have seen some big walls,
notibly about 20 min north of the city near San Ramon,
right off of the main road. It looks like you could do
some top roping, or some trad. The thing is, there is
NO rock climbing culture here, NO eqiuptment, and
certainly no bolts set up anywhere. So bring all
equiptment neccessary. I would love to go scout out
some rocks with you if you are in the area, as I have
been itching to climb. Let me know, take care.

Spent a couple months out there one summer about 5 years ago. Traveled by bus pretty much throughout the whole country, keeping my eye out for stone. Didn't find a thing. Found a town infested with drugs, Bluefields, stayed at a hotel there with guys doing lines of crack on the lobby coffee table, a spotted fawn walking through the lobby, and ended up returning to the kick-back hostel in Grenada where travelers painted murals on the walls with any supplies they could find.. some good stories from there.

I have been living in Nicaragua for 7 years now and have seen some big wall climbing in San Juan del sir, along the main street that leads into the town. But big rock climbing is commonly done in el canyon de somoto. But you have to bring everything you need. I also know of a coffee plantation near Jinotega where I am building a trees house resort along the Tuma river, where there is a long 100 foot wall that is along the river.

How cool - I went there before I was a climber - please report back on your findings - I hope you go to the "Grand Canyon of Nicaragua" and a TR with lots of photos would be excellent... Good luck! I thought it was a beautiful place and have always wanted to go back. I have some relatives who run a coffee plantation/ eco-lodge there called Selva Negra, it's up in a jungly cloud forest, pretty awesome.
