I'm sitting here eating some cookie dough ice cream. It's pretty good stuff. I'll have beer later. I'm partial to ice cream with marshmellow in it. I also like peanut butter. Is there any ice cream flavor that uses vanilla ice cream as the main ingredient and only peanut butter and marshmellow mixed in? That would be a sweet flavor. I have yet to find that elixer on the east coast.

At one time.......then they sold out. May still be in the area, but not owned by Ben or Jerry.

I sure as hell am not craving ice cream at this time of year.... For god's sake, it's WINTER!
But in summer....I have a slight problem with the ice cream. I love it, and though I try to go with lighter versions, it just isn't the same as Hagen Daaz or some other high fat content stiff.
My favorite classic is HD Rocky Road. Pure vanilla would be okay if you add a good quality hot fudge sauce, I suppose. I like the Vanilla Cherry but I figure - if I'm going to ingest all those calories I might as well get the Rocky Road.
HD has a Banana Split ice cream that tastes surprisingly good. And their Creme Brulee is actually satin-smooth instead of more crystall-y as a usual ice cream.

another vote for rocky road. I love ice cream when it's cold out.
We used to walk all the way from west Laramie to past the university in blizzards to hit baskin Robbins.
I don't really like Hagen Dås, or any of those though, it's like buttered ice cream.
Although it occurs to me right now that I sat across from Happie at a table in front of the Deli at the facelift and ate milk choclate HD bar, so it's not like a hard and fast rule, or anything. And Choc It's-Its™ are kinda like god on a stick, though.

I've been on a Double Rainbow Coffee Blast kick for some time now (though that is on hiatus for a while since I'm all fattened up for the winter). Trader Joe's is private labeling this now. Honorable mention to Starbuck's Java Chip as well.
Top it off with Trader Joe's Midnight Moo and you're all set.
I used to love Ben and Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch, but I've lost my taste of it somehow. Maybe it changed, maybe I did.
My wife loves Rocky Road, but only the Dreyer's brand. I am not a Rocky Road fan, but it will do if there is nothing else available!

P.S. Don't matter how cold out it is... ice cream is year round for me. I remember standing in line on January 4th in Cambridge, Mass. at Steve's ice cream way back in the day. There was a long line snaking out the door even then. The temperature? 4 below zero! It was worth it.

Cap'n, I remember really liking the Cappucino It's-it's but it's been a while. Oddly, for as much of a stone coffee addict as I am, I don't generally go for coffee flavored stuff. Though it's hard to beat coffee & ice cream...

I've been making my own ice cream for a while now and I've been making peanut butter ice cream from day 1.
I've got one of those old-timey crank jobs.
Basic vanilla recipe:
-1 quart cream (half-and-half, cream, whipping cream, milk, 2%, non-fat, mix of above, whatever, it all works)
-1 cup sugar
-1 tablespoon vanilla extract
-1 pinch salt
All the ice creams I make are all variations on this. Add a quarter-cup peanut butter to make peanut butter ice cream.
Coconut-pineapple is another of my favorites.
Double the basic vanilla recipe and add 1 can of Coconut Cream (look for it in the alcohol dept) and 1 can crushed pineapple.

I guess It's-Its are a sub-category of ice cream. They rock. Introduced to me years ago when I first moved to SF (their home) by an artist colleague who was a serious stoner. I remember once he and I were rooming together at a trade show. He couldn't fall asleep at 2 am. So he ordered an espresso from room service and promptly passed out.

What Chaz said. The stuff you buy is a pretty pale imitation of real ice cream. Prunes and armagnac is a pretty good flavoring combo.

I can't help but think of that line from "Wayne's World". Seriously though, I don't like ice cream that much anymore, but I remember an old trick. If you have some real vanilla bean ice cream, crush some fresh black pepper on it and it will make the vanilla stronger. It may sound weird, but it really is good.
