Well deserved. I was rescued off of the nutcracker a few years ago after 2 broken legs. I don't know all of the intimate details of the rescue & the team but I imagine he was an integral part. I had a several month email exchange with John afterwards...he helped me track the guy down who I'd been climbing with It wasn't an easy task, he did a bunch of detective work and went way above and beyond the call of duty but it sounds like that is how he does things. I was impressed and extremely appreciative! Thanks, John!!

John Dill appears in the The Sharp End movie, yelling at Ammon through the bullhorn,
asking him if he needed a rescue... So did Ammon get rescued or did he knott?
I just read the SF Gate article, and regarding this part:
Dill seems to enjoy tales of lucky breaks and miraculous saves, including the recent rescue of a man whose shorts caught on a rock, preventing a thousand foot fall off Half Dome. His reports about them are famous not only for their astute analysis but for their usefulness as cautionary tales.

John Dill has been central in the innovation of many, if not most, modern rescue techniques. Preferring to remain "behind-the-scenes" he's the kind of fellow who happily encourages others to be the first to publish his concepts. A very clever man, that John Dill, always years ahead of the curve. A well-deserved honor.
It was a great experience to work for Yosar back in the 80's.
John Dill's decisions and organization saved my life back in 1986, on the South Face of Half Dome.

A well-deserved honour, as I'm sure my brother would agree.
There's a photo-essay on YOSAR in the current issue of Climbing magazine, including B&W photos of John, Werner, Merry, Link, and others. Again, well-deserved. The cover title for the article is "Angels of Yosemite: Meet YOSAR, the World's Top Rescue Team". Knowing some of the people involved, and how modest they are, I suspect they wouldn't claim to be more than one of the world's top...

I often think of John Dill. Dig his Staying Alive piece. I first met him in I am guessing spring of 1970 or the next season, 1971. At the time I did not realize that he was 10 years my senior. But kind of an MIT engineer type of guy, intense, clear, and frankly driven but at the same time modest in his projects. I mean really intense. We all liked him but it wasn't clear if he understood this. And so from then on, he just kept doing this Valley thing, and like Werner, has been up there for nearly 4---FOUR---decades.

hey there... i learned about john dill here, thanks to all you guys...
good heroes are hard to find... yosemite is a place where the spotlight has hit them, even though such heroes are wanting to just be part of the land they love... seems their love for mankind, brings them out by duty of the heart, like the night-time stars...
the good lord make them shine bright... and bright they will always shine--and even more so, in the lives of those that they have saved...
heres a sweet thank you to those that help those that have fallen... may all have a chance to live a full and rich life with those they love...
