That's a great story - I have been following it on CascadeClimbers.com.
My mom used to keep this book on her cookbook shelf:
I think it was there more as of a threat that if we didn't like her cooking...

I"m impressed he made it. He was out a long time, it's a big mtn to get lost on, and there were a couple of days of bad weather.

From that ever useful (but sometimes questionable) source Wikipedia:
Some species of centipedes can be hazardous to humans because of their venomous bites. Although a bite to an adult human may only be painful, those with allergies that are similar to that of bee stings and small children are at greater risk. Smaller centipedes usually do not puncture human skin.
Scolopendra gigantea, also known as the Amazonian giant centipede, is the largest existing species of centipede in the world, reaching over 30 cm (12 in) in length. It is known to eat bats, catching them in midflight,[15] as well as rodents and spiders.
A couple of years ago I saw a (YouTube? I can't recall) video on the net that shows a centipede devouring a mouse. Shudder.
If you don't eat those suckers, a mutated 1950s version may eat you (if you are wearing 3D glasses).
I think I will start working on the script for a new movie, The Arthropod That Ate Yosemite.
A giant (mutated) centipede goes on the rampage in Yosemite Valley, devouring all in its path. It is oblivious to National Guard bullets and mortars, and the creature (which is multiplying, unbeknownst to authorities) is said to climb wall and snatch climbers, though it prefers the fattier and meatier tourons on the valley floor.
Now if only Roger Corman would produce it.

That's nothing - on the first ascent of the Grand Wall at Squamish, Baldwin and Cooper were sucking on moss to get water. But in the video later made about it, with interview footage from the time, Cooper sounds like he says they were sucking on "moths".
Ewwww!
