David and I went to the Pit to get a few pitches in on Sunday, and also to take some pictures for climbing topos for our guidebook: Northern Arizona Rocks! A Climber's Guide
On our way out we encountered some gigantic meat bees buzzing around the parking lot! They were with what looked like some kind of giant worker bee, who suddenly came at us with an insistent buzzing!
We carefully avoided the smaller, mean-looking meat bees, they looked viscious, and we imagined lethal, dripping stingers cloaked under the massive yellow carapaces. We passed by what looked like the queen in her hive...careful...she looked more relaxed and settled than the other ones. I guess queens are like that - I'm no Entomologist!
As we put our things away delicately, the worker and the two drone? meat bees went back to their business of mauling hikers and climbers at the start of the trail, apparently not minding our proximity to their queen.
We were both relieved to get out of there, I can tell you! We didn't know if they had recently scouted this new hive and were just setting up, or what! but we were glad not to see more of those nasty meat bees!
I haven't an Epi pen large enough for the Killer Arizona Meat Bees!!!!
