The first guidebook for the popular Ozone climbing area of Highway 14 in the Columbia River Gorge, will be available at an Oct. 1 fundraiser and release party.
The book was written by Vancouver’s Kevin Evansen and his friends, who collaborated on the project to help their climbing buddy Kevin Rauch.
Thirty-four-year-old Rauch, who lives in Portland, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS, in 2007. Before he had become ill, Evansen said Rauch was one of the most prolific route developers at the Ozone, which is past mile marker 23 off Highway 14.
Rauch’s friends, including Evansen, wrote and printed the guidebook with volunteer time and donated resources. All of the money raised from guidebook sales will be given to Rauch and his family to help with expenses not covered by Rauch’s health insurance. The guidebook will be sold at an Oct. 1 fundraiser at Lucky Lab Beer Hall, 1945 N.W. Quimby St., Portland. The event will be from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. and the books will be available for a minimum donation of $25.
Based on requests, the friends printed about 700 copies of the guidebook.
“We’ve received overwhelming support,” Evansen, 35, said.
Evansen said his friend has been inspiration.
“You’d never hear him complain about what he’s going through. He has a lot of integrity and humility.”
