Can someone tell me how to add text next to the pics posted on the forum already? I went through them with my dad, and have all the names of the routes, first ascents, people, and some stories to go with, as well as the year/ season on most. I just don't know how to get it on there to share. I did tag some of the ones on the Flickr direct link. Help!

Amanda,

To change the captions on photos posted on a supertopo forum thread, you will need to login as the person who posted the photos (Smiley Cain in this case), then use the [Edit] button, and add text below the filename for each photo. This may not be easy, if you don't recognize the filename. It also has to be done within about 10 days of the original post. The original thread is "Yosemite climbing pics", at:

http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=658634&msg=660180

Here are 2 alternatives:

1. Put all the photos onto your flickr stream, and add all the captions there. Then people can see all the captions there, and they can be easily changed later as needed.
To put all the photos on your flickr site, you need to upload them from your PC, and maybe download them from Smiley Cain's post or from photobucket first (if you don't have them on your PC yet).

2. It might make sense to repost the photos in a different order, maybe chronological or by climb? You could do this after first putting all the photos and captions on flickr, and maybe getting some help if some captions are missing.

Thanks Clint I'll get with Smiley and do something. For now, the ones on flickr have comments as of today.

Cool, I see the captions on most of the photos on flickr.
My perspective - I don't know these guys; I have done Lurking Fear and the Muir Wall.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/luvebug/

001. "Alan Bard and Dave Bircheff - top of Fried Eggs"
[Edit:] Fried Eggs is above Water Wheel Falls in "Grand Canyon of Tuolomne".

002. No caption, but looks like Lurking Fear (Middle Cathedral
behind.
[Edit: Jim Pettigrew]

003. "Fluffy euro guide we met on the Fear"
[Edit: Phil Bircheff :-) ]

004. "Pettigrew and Phil Bircheff high up on Fear. May '76 afternoon"
[Edit: Pettigrew on left, Bircheff on right]
Maybe on the bivouac ledge below the Grand Traverse?

005. [Edit: Rick Wheeler on Incredible Hulk, Macedonian route]

006. [Edit: Rick Wheeler on Incredible Hulk, Macedonian]

007. [Edit: Rick Wheeler on top of the Incredible Hulk, storm clouds below]

008. "Dale Bard on slings"
Start of Excalibur. Photo is in Yosemite Climber

009. "Dave Bircheff on Muir. Tied off knife blade pins ( skinnies)"
Pitch or two below the final big corner, probably.

010. No caption. Going over small roof.
Yellow pants / headband = Dale Bard? Excalibur?

011. No caption. RFC below large grey roof.
Yellow pants / headband = Dale Bard? Excalibur?

012. No caption. Grey rock, white dikes, sky visible upper right.
High on the North American Wall.

013. No caption. Dave Bircheff in same clothes as 009.
Following large LFC, high on El Cap.
Probably the top of the final corner on the Muir Wall.

014. No caption. Following short flaring crack, pillar below.
Maybe not too high up - shadow below. Lost Arrow Direct?

015. "Dave Bircheff on top of Arrow Direct dining on fig Newtons and rolls."

016. "Will Miller - Arrow Direct"

017. "Rick Wheeler"
What route? Stream visible below.

018. "Looking out over the Igloo, Kauk belaying Steve Sutton on the last leads of N A"
Lots of ice!

019. "What the? Lurking Fear FA, fall."

020. "Phil Bircheff - FA Lurking Fear"

021. "The mighty fist of Phil Bircheff"
Looks like the long wide pitch. In 1986, we aided this with cams.
Freed on the first ascent? Or aided on bongs?

022. "Dave Bircheff on Lurking Fear '76"
LFC, maybe in middle of route? (Lots of rock above)

023. "Dave Bircheff racking up with a che"
Looks like Lurking Fear (Middle Cathedral in background)
"che" = cigarette?

Both sets together (46 photos) on Smiley Cain's flickr site at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/29820198@N07/page1/
which includes the above as 1-24 with a new #4 added (uploaded August 23), then the second set is 25-46 (uploaded August 31). No captions on this site at present.

[Edit:] Many captions are now up on the other thread:

Yes, 003 is Phil & 004 he is on the right.
007 looks like Phil at the top of 3rd Pillar, Mt Dana, or maybe that stack of rubble above Tioga Pass road, across from Lee Vining ice, Wolf's Head or something.

What a treasure trove of pics!!!

Amanda,

Got any photos of climbing at the Pinnacles in 1965 with Jim Bridwell? If so, maybe you and Smiley could scan a few and post to Jody's Pinnacles 60s/70s thread?

FFA: Jim Bridwell, Mike Kilmer, Dave Bircheff, 65
72. Swallow Crack 5.6 **
FA: Dave Bircheff, Phil Bircheff, 2/65
78. Ordeal 5.8 ***, 6x, p

Clint, there might be some slides of the Pinnacles but as I said before, me and Smiley went through about 3-4 hundred slides to pick a few out to share. Even though they are my fathers, this was my project, not something he felt he wanted to do. So There most likely are, and I will ask, but please don't get your hopes up. I also went over the posted pics with my father to get the captions. He has a whole notebook of hand written topos from all his climbs, so we tried as memory served to figure out what was where. Some of these might be names they used in the 70's, and not today. If you come across a caption like "racking up with a che" or "Fluffy euro guide" these are personal jokes to friends from that era, not errors. These captions are straight from the mouth of Dave Bircheff. Let you know if there are Pinnacle pics. Thanks.

Bump for the best sort of stuff:

012 looks like the "blade traverse" on the North American Wall.

You are correct about the N A Wall. All of these pics are of climbs on NA, Muir, Sentinel Falls, Fried Eggs, Hulk, Lurking Fear, Arrow Direct, and maybe some SE Butt of Cathedral. If you recognize others please post! Thank You!
By the way, what does bump mean - this may be a very dumb ?

A "bump", whether stated as such or not, is a way to move a thread on SuperTopo to the top of page 1. Usually a thread that actually has to do with climbing, and that is or should be of interest or read by more people, or generate more comments. Within reason, it is a handy tactic, and even self-bumping is OK.

You simply find the thread (which can be the problem, if it's on page 18), and post a message to it. Either something substantive, or just a bump. If it results in there being more interest, and posts, you can always delete the bump message later - reduces clutter.

It is not considered good etiquette to bump non-climbing threads, especially those that are more than a few days old. It used to be that you could post a 'bump' message, then immediately delete it, and the thread would still remain on page 1. No longer, fortunately - prevents anonymous bumping.

But climbing threads can be bumped at any time.

I have a long list of good climbing-related threads, if you feel like looking at, or bumping, any of them. Your father and uncle might well be interested in looking at some, too. For example, there's a good one at http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=668163

Edit: And I've just demonstrated another sub-method of bumping. If yours was the most recent post to a thread, and is within the last week and so editable, go back and find it, copy the old post, delete the old post, then re-post the old one as a new one.
