Outside Online Magazine has an interesting article on the making of this movie. Book written by Jon Krakauer.

I like the part in the book with the stories about other Alaskans. Like the guy who thought the plane was going to rescue him but in cheering actually gave the "all is fine" signal.

Alaska has a different breed of crazy. Akclimber? HA.

Prediction: this thread turns into an interweb fight over whether the subject of the book was a (i) a modern day Jack Kerouac or (ii) an idiot.

Seemed like a nice kid to me.

little known fact (i'm wondering if they covered it in Outside):

so, Sir Apple Benowitz, back when he lacked experience, tried to freeze to death in that bus the winter prior to Alex's fatal adventure- i remember he was down the Stampede road in January and it was frigging 50 below- he made the classic mistake of thinking that a metal bus would be warmer than his nylon tent- so Alex, months later, ended up reading some of the books that Apple left behind- i only mention it because Apple at that time seemed a representative prototype of the mistake-making fool in the willderness- but somehow he survived this phase to become the seasoned hardman he is today, unlike Alex- they should have put Sir Apple into the movie as a prologue-- you know, the one that survived.....
that bus reminds me of that spaceship owned by Lazarus in the original Star Trek-- a little time portal sitting out there on the tundra

Just shows you can make money with anything using the media.
The Alaskans think the guy was a fruit and dread the soon to be hordes of pilgrims. The story I heard before the magazine article, book, movie, etc was that he was a little unstable and had ran away from home. Not that he was off on a great adventure. Isn't some hollywood genious involved in making this story into a movie anyway? Those guys know everything. I think we should elect all of them to government.

Naaahh… That bus is too cool to shoot… and I didn’t have any toys with me ‘cuz I was on the way back from the People’s Republic of Kalifornistan, at the end of the Tuolumne season! But yeah… ammo has been too expensive for a while now.
