BENEFIT FOR STEVE DIECKHOFF:

Dear climber friends,

Supertopo, with all of its trad flavor, seemed like a good place to post this. A fellow climber and diehard trad Steve Dieckhoff is up against it with cancer and needs our help. If you live in or around Boulder, you know him from Eldo and for his art, and also for his unflinching stance (whether you agree with it or not) in the Boulder Canyon bolt wars.

On Saturday, June 2 at 7:00 p..m. at The Spot gym in Boulder, Colorado, friends of the climber Steve Dieckhoff, a longtime boulder climber and artist currently battling lymphoma, will be holding a fundraising event with free beer, slideshows, and an art and gear auctions. Steve has no health insurance and will need all the help he can get with health-care and living expenses as he enters the next, crucial phase of his treatment, likely a marrow transplant and additional chemotherapy. All proceeds from this event ($7 at the door) will go directly to Steve.

First of all, we have set up a benefit fund at:

Steve Dieckhoff Benefit Account
Pueblo Bank and Trust
2950 Pearl Street
Boulder, CO 80301

The account number is 1190296.

As the details firm up, we'll get flyers and PDFs going out, and a web page at climbing.com, but please feel free to donate, pass this info along, and help us get the word out now. More details will follow soon. To see some of Steve’s art, please visit www.stevedieckhoff.com/gallery.html.

Matt, I am there. I talked to a friend of Steve's not too many months ago and she mentioned he was having health problems. I had no idea he had lymphoma. Got it on the calendar.

Can't make it to Boulder but will send something to the fund.

Hope he makes it through this.

Hi Tim

Steve has had 6 chemo treatments so far beginning last winter, and will need to begin right away.

In the interest of full disclosure re. the Fund, since it sounds like there were some issues with a previous benefit fund posted to ST, Steve and I set it up today -- he and I have access to the account, as does a friend of his with power of attorney. All moneys donated to the account go straight to Steve, as will all proceeds from the event. He can access this directly himself (it's at his bank) and I'll only access it if need be. Once we have more info up and running, you'll be able to track Steve's progress and funds raised at climbing.com and/or a myspace page.

You can also reach me directly at msamet@climbing.com or 303-225-4628 x107.

Thanks,
Matt Samet

Matt, those so-called "issues" are history. The guy involved no longer is around any climbing forums from what I can tell. So no worries.

Matt,
I was up to my eyeballs in those "issues" and I can fill you in on exactly what went down and how to avoid new issues. Also willing to do whatever I can to help Steve. Call me.

I use to work with Steve in Estes Park on a job for Tim Harrington back in 2001/2002. Him and Strappo were there, along with Chol and a few other climbers. Good guys to work with.

Sorry to hear about this Steve. If I could be there I would. I'll try to send something your way to help.

Even though you got pissed with I used your table saw....J/k

Thanks, Matt, for your efforts in a worthy cause. Sad that it's necessary, but this is a good place to look for help.

Thanks, also, for the disclosure about the arrangements. There are fundraisers and appeals of this kind every few months on SuperTopo, and it helps when everything is public, bearing in mind the privacy of the individuals involved. A good precedent.

Good luck!

Anders

ps You didn't need to say "trad" climber. SuperTopo may not be overrun with boulderers, but we like all sub-species.

Matt- I'm so out of the Boulder scene I hadn't heard this difficult news. I'll be there if I can possibly arrange it. But maybe I should just save the gas money and send it directly to the account you've set up. Give Steve my very best wishes. And send me his contact info via e-mail, if you would.

Thanks, Jeff Lowe

Not good news. Having played chess with Steve, I know him to be resilient, though. Let's hope and pray. I'll send what I can. I'm fighting my own battles at the moment, which have eaten up most of my reserves, but I'll find some way to do something.

All the best, Steve and Matt,

That's a great idea, Jeff. You inspire me. I could send some of my books, "Wizards of Rock, a History of Free Climbing in America" and my latest collection of essays, "Everything That Matters." Will need to know where and, if that would be of help.

Other posters including the logos from those who've chipped in are up around town, and more info and links to their sites are at: http://www.climbing.com/news/press/dieckhoff/

Sat night, June 2, 7 p.m., The Spot gym, Boulder, Colorado.

Thanks,

Matt
