At its peak, what sort of daily/monthly utilization did you guys see for this forum?

Traffic peaked in 2015 with 20 million page views and 1.2 million people visiting the site (source: Google Analytics). Traffic has been slowly declining over the last 4 years. In 2018 was 13 million page views from 0.9 million people.

To give you a sense of monthly load, June 2015 was 1.6 million page views.

Key challenges to keep in mind are dealing with spikes in traffic which occur from time to time, such as when Todd Skinner died on Leaning Tower when traffic rose 100x for a sustained period of time. Another challenge to think through is dealing with full-text searches once you get over 1 million posts. Modern web systems provide lots of ways to elegantly handle these challenges, which are really quite modest scale problems in the big picture, but most low-cost web solutions are likely to struggle at even these modest numbers.

Locker alone accounted for 500k page views/month. Losing him put a dent in traffic.

That’s comforting to know. At first I feared you’d gone Momo.

Interesting stats, RJ .

I would have never guessed it that high. I wonder how clicks are accounted for though. 1000 people x 1000 clicks and you get to 1 million pretty fast. But I guess it would have to be measured from independent ISPs to be valid. That’s a lot of visitors.

Some fun trivia:
I remember RJ telling me, when I asked him to delete all my posts around 2011, that the deletion crashed ST. RJ got much better at it though 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That’s post Dawn Wall and as I recall commentary on this site was cited as source in a few international news outlets. #1 search term: “Honnlove”

That's very useful information to anyone who is truly savvy enough to consider creating some kind of alternative to ST. There have been many ad hoc solutions suggested, but I'm dubious of whether the well-intended people who have thrown them out there truly understand the scope of what it means to run a forum like this.

Seems like you may be have been the geek behind this operation. Traffic hits per hour/day/week are interesting but what I personally would _really_ appreciate is your monthly bandwitdth usage (preferably broken out to just forums, if possible). I have the infra to scale the rest of it no worries but bandwitdth costs..... suck balls! Aye, I long for the olden days when pipes were sold by size alone and not size plus an additional premium for actually _using_ that bandwidth.

RJ, it appears that the figures that you posted above are for the entire ST website as a whole, rather than specifically just the Forum. Is that correct? Of the total number of page views on the site per given month/year, do you have a percentage breakdown of Forum vs. the rest of the site? Just curious.
