Steve, along with Mark Beverly wrote many articles important to the rescue, caving and rock climbing devices.
He explained to us how our repelling devices worked and when our multipoint anchors would fail. He was very active with the Albequrque Mountain rescue. He and Mark won many times for their presentation at ITRS.
In addition he made a name for himself, along with his wife Nancy for developing unique and unusual gemstones. The Smithsonian removed the Hope Diamond from its setting twice for a project they worked on that proved the Hope came from the French Blue Diamond that disappeared during the French Revolution. They have a couple of stones in the Smithsonian.
Steve was a senior Scientist at Sandia Labs. His specialty was what makes buildings fail and explosions. Sandia is naming their next super computer after him.
Because of his job he avoided anything that resembled social media. He never logged into Supertopo but he enjoyed following it. He particularly enjoyed landslide posts and the Big Sur Bridge failure threads. He used the Big Sur Bridge failure for demonstrations at work.
He and Supertopo will be missed.

hey there, say, crazy bat... oh my... thank you for sharing this post...
i learned a lot here... though i do not cave, i love to learn about the things that folks, do...
and, all the help that they can offer others...
my condolences to his family and loved ones...
and, prayers as they go through this sad time...
i would say, 'as to your quote' = and put a quote here, but:
as to EVERYTHING that you shared about him and his life:
wow! and, wow, again...
i am glad that i learned about him, thank you again...

And that is why supertopo is dying. It has been two months since Steve's passing. It took me this long to post because of the grief.
I truly believe that God will give this troll the same thing he is passing out.
Of course he may believe it is the same Mark Beverly. It is not. Mark is on the taco. I guess he could sue now too.

I think I've read all of his publications on climbing issues. He has cast some light in dark corners.

Your brother sounds like the kind of wonderful people which the world needs more of. Sorry I never got to meet him, your loss must be incalculable and painful. Best regards to you an yours for your loss. Hug.
