What amazes me is that a BOLT THE WORLD proponent likes you is also regular cordless freak
solo climbing, as much, as I love it, can't be reduced to trite. It is part of what makes Honluvs extreme achievements so much more amazing to me, climbing for the camera, whether on-sight or rehearsed a hundred times, every time is taking a chance that could result in a fatal fall.

The top rope video is stupid from a kid who has already stopped trying to get better at climbing. He is just looking to be famous, masturbating for the camera. While there is nothing wrong with having fun, glorifying the sad changes in climbing ethos, making the whole activity look trite is
ill-conceived & what happens every summer weekend at Rumney & the Gunks.
Should delete this thread it already lives, self-posted by the doosh on the reject.

Had to stop in mid-thought to make the morning happen. breakfast & the school bus thing.

 Of course, yes I see the fun in the send-up of the silly modern day gym climbers, it is great satire. The video editing is excellent, the syncopation of the music, & the singing is also very good (Karaoke)
The production value, the skills exhibited in the crafting of the video are very good that is common among the Instagram generation.

The definition of the term "Frist Ascent" is not debatable.
Truth is still the truth, the first time a piece of rock gets climbed is the first, by definition.

Then when you start to add qualifiers, changing the metrics, you get into the modern climbing debate that tends to be more about a
climber's, or groups need to satisfy ego. Using words to re-define the art, reducing it to sport. So yes we have given up the pure for the more inclusive by the addition of words to quantify the endeavor.

A first ascent has been given second place. It is seen as "below" the now all-important "better style" of the first "Free" ascent.

So I'm not saying that it isn't a sing of the times, or that it doesn't poke fun at the low hanging fruit... very successfully. I called out for being "TRITE."

trite
/trīt/
adjective

(of a remark, opinion, or idea)

overused and consequently of little import;

"this point may now seem obvious and trite"

synonyms:
. . . hackneyed,
banal, clichéd,. . . , vapid,
commonplace,
ordinary, common,
stock, conventional,
stereotyped,
predictable;
stale, overused,
overworked, overdone,
worn out, timeworn,
tired,
dull, pedestrian,
run-of-the-mill,
routine,
humdrum;

informal

old hat, corny, played out

informal cornball,

"the observation struck me as both trite and irrelevant"

a long list of words that all can be used to describe the issues "sent Up" in the send-up. Taking aim at the low hanging fruit. . .
Making fun of how young men climbers think is not new.
Showing by exaggerated example - the way some act; over-important, looking for attention(Love?) self-aggrandizing when of little merit, etc. - does nothing to build up others or instill a better view or ethos of climbers. What it insults, for the sake of insulting, is the lowest common denominator.
A place that most of us have been at some point.

Funny is in the eye of the beholder

All that said when can I convince you to come & do all the 1st ascents of my top rope problems ?
Please its a real request. There are at least 10 good climbs all 5.10s & 11s.

I've free'd the crack line out through the "V" notch roof.
The flying buttress follows a line just left of the arete & has pin (RP, knife-blade) placements ( you can see them)
I have resisted placing that sort of the gear.
I have left it as a TR, it deserves to be climbed in the best possible style.
The top roped faces on the sides? might be "leadable" but are good enough to be bolted

WOW! you guys really took that seriously. I posted it because I thought it was funny as heck and really well done. the kids climbing ability has absolutely nothing to do with it. He is a talented Musician and has a great sense of humor. Something that certain folks seem to lack when the silliness of their top rope FA's is mentioned. As long as you are going to be all serious and grumpy a few points.

1. I have never been a bolt everything kind of guy but if the chicks want it bolted I am at least willing to listen.

2. Top ropeing big roofs is just plain st00pid. Great way to cut your rope and get hurt.

3. that video is funny as heck and pokes fun at all the right people in all the right ways. I give it a 10 though the daisy dukes could be considered aid for hitting the high notes. .

4. I have 1,000 times more respect for Herb and Jan climbing the 5.6 Sickel with tennis shoes and only two bolts than I ever will for anybody claiming a top rope FA regardless of how hard it is.

5. Oh, did I mention that video is freaking funny and Very well done;)
