Dude’s probably a good pilot - he knows how to think! Never heard of Kam Air though.
Maybe he’ll get a job now at a major?

Always look under yer hotel room bed! Some friends on their wedding night checked into a
famous hotel in Seattle and the new wife always looked under the bed. She found a plate
with a pile of coke! LOL!

Also on BBC today is an article about the 1611 people per day who have a really bad day
from being bitten by poisonous snakes. 387 of them die and the survivors often suffer life
changing debilitating injuries.

Reads like there was more freakish luck than quick thinking to credit for what actually lead to his survival, but still a crazy story.

Mosquitos kill far more people than terrorists or snakes or terrorists with snakes.

I lost a doob when it dropped into the parking brake housing on a rental car.

note to self; never drive a rental car into Mexico and back,..

I'm thinking among the five floors, he wasn't the only one to hide under a bed. They did check and shoot through the other of the two beds. He did a bunch of other stuff, too, pretty much all of which turned out to be completely useless except for perhaps leaving the patio door open. He gives himself too much credit, IMO. Super lucky. I'm thinking many of the other rooms had similar stories, they just didn't end the same way.

Wow

"Because I'm a pilot and a trainer I've studied crisis management and decision-making for years, so even if I'm only going to a restaurant or to the theatre I think about sitting by the door, or close to the emergency exit - it's automatic, almost second nature."

Keeping a positive outlook

"At that moment something in my brain told me that I wasn't going to die that day. I had survived when I hadn't gone for dinner at my usual time. I had survived when those guys first came into my room and had shot at the other bed, not the one that I was underneath. I had survived when the sniper's bullets had missed me. And right now I was well hidden."

 some things to take away

....small pieces and put some inside my nose to filter the smoke. I put another piece of the T-shirt around my mouth and put lots of milk and water on it, like a double filter, something I'd learned from training with the fire department at Athens International Airport."

As to the small pieces of cloth providing a measure of filtration...
in reference to the post below,
I don't think it was useless
I do a similar trick while chopping onions...

small pieces and put some inside my nose to filter the smoke.
That sounds so completely useless to anyone who has actually used a mask to filter anything, ever. What saved him from smoke was having the patio door open, and smoke wasn't even the reason he opened it. I'm thinking the luck of 1000 monkeys typing Shakespeare more than clear thinking here. The thing I don't like about the story is the lack of humility for the families of all his coworkers who died. Most like him are more humble, often questioning why they were chosen to survive - but not this guy.
