climber the midst of LA sprawl..
Topic Author's Original Post - Dec 27, 2018 - 07:40am PT
280,000 visiters in December? That almost 10,000 a day. Holy moly.

Note the quotes from Rand Abbott advising bootleg campers that campfires are illegal and having his life threatend... (and kudos to Rand for trying to make a difference...).

De Luca thinks the park needs to shut their gates."

That's the dumbest f*#king thing I've read all day!

We know walls don't work. That's why the government's shut down right now. What makes this idiot think a gate's going to do anything?

Joshua Tree Nat Park is 1,235.4 sq mi.
The Mojave desert is 47,877 sq mi.
Even I can do that math and you can camp most anywhere in the desert, for free.

Seth and Sabra are awesome for sure!!!

Unfortunately, they're fighting uphiill against a lot of stupid, selfish, uncaring people.
Hard to believe they don't at least fund the standard staff of LEOs. Hell, they made $30/carload the other 345 days of the year.
The damage will cost more than paying rangers. WTF!!?!?!

Humans suck.

^^^ I agree with Reilly. Is it the national park designation that has drawn a disproportionate number of visitors to Joshua Tree? Seems like it. I wonder what's the ratio of tourists / climbers visiting? You can wander all over the Mojave and never see a single person. Even the Sierra Club DPS peaks are mostly deserted on the weekends, and I've seen some truly incredible desert scenery on those trips.

I think there ought to be a lightly maintained - level of camping available elsewhere outside the park. Kind of like all those sweet Forest Service campgrounds up in Tahoe.

Maybe put in a 50 site loop by Spectre Peak / Diadic Point. It's just past Twentynine Palms and would give that town some business. Nice boulder jumbles all over that area, fun for the whole family.

Although there is a part of me that cringes at spreading the chaos. Maybe I'll just stick to Woodson this winter...

PS. GREAT THANKS to the volunteers helping in the park.

Yes, great experiment in Libertarian theory. Can was agree that it is a total failure? If we go back to the way it was I promise I will never criticize a tool ever again.

if the weather warms up we will not need a wall cuz those pit toilets are going to be RIPE.

Thanks to Seth and Sabra and Rand, they walk the talk for sure.

Sure, camp for free in jt. Just as easy as car camping.

Well, except for that pesky walk in a mile part.

Libertarianism is NOT anarchy.

What you have is anarchy, no structure at all.

That visitor count is why I almost never go to JT anymore. So many people! And since traffic has gotten so bad that you can't drive out there on Friday night anymore, the wait to get into the park on Saturday morning is not worth it. Thankfully there are lots of newer climbing areas in SoCal that don't get that busy.

Token, is that not what libertarians want?

Every Libertarian I have ever talked to wanted NO government in their life. That is Anarchism.

Libertarianism is NOT anarchy.

Libertarianism stands, to me, for a lot of positives. But, the core libertarian policy on public lands is a deal breaker for me. I'm not talking about the political party, which is a joke. If the Cato Institute brand of Libertarians had their way, JTNP would be unaffected right now because it would be privatized.

What's happening in Yosemite? I read that all the private concessions are all open. Are there no Rangers working there too?

Frumy, libertarianism means minimal government that protects peoples liberty.

It does not mean privatizing public land.
