Circling the Dwain is an example. Posters get off topic on OT threads and they achieve a life of their own which often isn’t very pretty.
Climbing threads (the original purpose of ST...duh) keep people more focused and on topic but, alas, they seem too boring for this crowd.

I'm not sure that "boring" is the right word, Jim. I'd say "diverse."

One of the fun things about this forum is that the conversation isn't just about one topic (climbing). It's much more diverse. I like it.

One should be choosy when picking which threads to look at. Some good stuff will be missed but so will almost all the bad.

A good rule is to only look at threads by posters you have learned to trust.

I'm having my doubts about this donini guy, now. He was so good.

I come here to read the climbing stories, but there just aren't that many of them. For other subjects, the opinions of the fearless climbers are always interesting. As are the opinions of people who live in their cars.

What constitutes a "climbing topic?" Is climate change off topic? I certainly don't think it is. What about social conditions that allow for more disadvantaged people to have opportunities to climb? Is that off topic? Access, affordability, communication, leisure time, advocacy, mentorship are all solidly on topic as far as I am concerned.

I don't think it's the topic that throws these threads off the rails. Rather it's the inability of certain people to think critically. What did Cosmic ever contribute? Some may think that he is a good person (I think he is a bigot), but what did he ever post that was thought provoking in any way? I won't miss him.

What did Cosmic ever contribute?

he was the authority on expedition planning for New
Jack City. though some of his TRs were rather brief

Anti. I spent some formative years in Apple Valley. Mom and Uncles went to VVHS when the ville housed around 6k people. When the major employer was the man who ran the nearby military bases.

If I went back, I'd probably agree, but my tribal nature makes me take exception to criticisms of white collar climbing. Where else do you go to shoot guns, meth, and sport climb from the tailgate on your truck? *

The desert really can pretty up, but it all comes back slowly it seems.

Nicely said.

For me, I’m glad that we all have the free will to create something like this thread, despite it being likely to turn out not pretty, while also commenting on the duh-ness in other people’s thinking, if that’s what you, for example, choose to do.

How we choose to use it - that’s on us.

Seems like maybe there’s some commonalities in how we choose to use it, that maybe we’d prefer not to notice in ourselves, while also calling attention to it in other people?

I went climbing with Cosmic a few years back near Apple Valley, and had a great day with him. In person he is mellow, kind, somewhat taciturn. At least on that one and only day I hung out with him.

I must say I do like the in-person persona more than the online! But hey, we each come here for our own reasons, to get our own type of fix whatever that might be, and nobody else can change whatever that is for each of us.

For me, the bar on banning people would be pretty high. I just skim over the gutter conversations and it doesn't really register- sort of an internal grease monkey thing.

Yup. We are fortunate to have a crowd here that has been in situations most can't imagine. Whatever is on your mind or problem you have, someone here can relate.

It is a campfire. People that have done incredible things just trading stories and thoughts.

The Google Eye is quite perceptive.

While we are off-topic, I find that Google can be quirky, inscrutable, or just guessing wildly. Here are the 2 choices it filled in for me after I entered "level of c".

Looks like the direction this thread took has made the point raised by donini in his original post!!
