G’day,
We are visiting from Australia and are wondering where there is a kids friendly, short walk in crag in Bishop area this time of year?
Any grades from 5.9 to 5.11b are good for us. Thanks for your help!!
Cheers,
Chris

Easiest access with a range of moderate grades will be the Lower Owens River Gorge.
https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105843309/lower-gorge
Check out the
1) Diamondback Area- sunny most of the day
2) Pink Wall & Big Tower- shade and sun
Paved road walk-in- range of 5.5-11s - most are new climbs so they won't be in the current book.
There's no top-rope access so someone will have to lead up to set the ropes up.
Windy Wall is OK too. Shorter walk but less choices and shady in the morning if it's cold. https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105895647/windy-wall

What Justthemaid said. An hour south is the Alabama Hills with lots and lots of short-approach climbs in the moderate range. Avoid on weekends if you can.

Owens River Gorge is not kid friendly. Fast moving creek, loose scree, stinging nettles, river crossings for some areas.

Pine creek is great with its 5 min approach. You can have your kids hanging out far enough from the wall (there's enough loose rock and tons of people to warrant that). Just watch out: my son managed to fall into a cactus patch that had very fine needles. At first I didn't even notice - all the needles just got stuck to his clothes. Then after he managed to transfer some to his skin and started wailing, I realized that they are nearly impossible to remove. Can be a very windy place
Owens is very dusty and chossy. You will easily find safe spots for kids there (they'll get filthy with all the dust and possibly dog poop), but don't expect to do more than 3 pitches/person after dealing with all the hassles. Sun goes behind the rim at 3 pm in November and it gets cold quickly.

Munge and Donini- I have to disagree- when was the last time either of you climbed the Lower Gorge?
We installed friendly bridges and moved tons of rock to make stable platforms around those two areas I mentioned .
The river is the lowest I've seen it in years right now . These are down the paved road ( I'm not suggesting anyone take kids down the Central Gorge Trail. ) Several climbs at Pink Wall were installed specifically for children and beginners. BTW.
Pine Creek has loads of moderates these days but I wouldn't consider the approaches "short" or easy for children as the OP requested.
(I guess it depends on the kid though.)
Alabama is a good suggestion. You can drive right to the bases.

Doesn't the hills have some production values? If traveling, it might be fun to go home and find some of the hangs in the movies with the kids, even if you aren't fans of westerns. Depending on your, or your kid's sense of humor, maybe stop by Wal-Mart and get some props for photo ops? Full disclosure, you can buy more than a plastic cap guns and cowboy hats.
Also, thanks to the protectors of the gorge. I haven't been there for years. Kids these days seem to be made differently too. Moreover, if yours are Aussie, they may have been born a grade harder than the ones spawned around here. I always thought the gorge was pretty for its development, especially the upper part. Sounds like there are more moderates now, ahem, beginner's routes too. Happy ventures.
