Since I know Mom doesn't visit here, and my email is being wonky, I decided to post what I was planning to send out via a group email to certain persons. Mom's 80th is today, the 22nd. Knowing that the variety of generations and personalities in ST is what it is, here goes anyhow:
My "gift" to her is a suggestion, to those who have known her or otherwise have been influenced, that you write to her. Even just a postcard. Or a few words on craft paper. Anything that strikes you.

Her address is 702 Magnolia Ave. Modesto, CA 95354

Thanks in advance, and for those who I do manage to get a group message to, sorry for the redundancy!

I met your mom at the Sierra Club 100th Annniversary picnic in Malibu. Super cool person. Your dad was a lucky man.

I met your Mom and Dad back in the late 60's at Tuolumne. She was so very sweet and friendly. When I saw that famous picture of them on top of Half Dome together, I remember thinking, "They look kind of grimey, but boy they look happy together."

One thing I would love to read someday, is your Mom's account of what it was like working at the Ahwanee Hotel back in the early 60's and all of a sudden this wild climber guy, Royal Robbins walks into her life, what that was like, what were her first impressions, etc. I bet it is a good story.

It's a classic one! Suffice to say that Mom had very protective parents (they lost their first child at birth), and she was raised to be quite the socially proper lady. Miss Modesto, even....

When she first encountered climbers (working at Ahwahnee during summer break from UC Berkeley), she loved the adventurous, somewhat naughty and definitively improper nature of their culture. What the hotel found abhorrent (ie: stealing leftover food off plates before the staff could clear them), she found amusing and intriguing.

The hotel, then, disallowed "fraternizing" with climbers - so she had to sneak out to hang with them. One night she went to their usual nightly fire/drinking scene at C4 and.... Dad saw her. The rest is history. :)

Hi Tama,
your mom only spoke to me once. She wanted to know what I was reading (The Fatal Impact by Moorehouse).

She shares a birthday with Walter Bonatti.
