Sadly, I just read of the passing of Ronald Lee Ermey in April due to complications from pneumonia.

The iconic jarhead was medically retired from the Marines in 1971. He went to college in the Philippines and studied drama, and then earned bit parts in The Boys In Company C and Apocalypse Now. His breakout came in 1987 when Stanley Kubrick hired him as a technical advisor. The director was so impressed that he cast him in the supporting role of GySgt. Hartman.

Since the world knew him as "Gunny" the Marines decided to play along. Although retired as a staff sergeant, in 2002 he was reactivated and promoted to gunnery sergeant, only to immediately retire him again.

I remember cracking up when he had his four little grandsons on parade in Mail Call only to have the smallest projectile vomit as the camera trained on him.

Here I'm showing him a herd of 45 antelope on my place at the SHOT show.

Semper Fi! I still get weak in the knees thinking of being given the once, twice, and thrice-over by the Midshipman Battalion’s Gunny.

His ad-hoc string of vitriol in Full Metal Jacket will, I believe, remain unsurpassed in movie history. Truly and inspiringly epic.

RIP
