Where is he these days. I met him at Garden of the Gods in the late 70's or early 80's. I'd just lead a .7 climb and rapped off. He came along and wanted me to top rope him on a side route. I had him on a hip belay. One of his gang wasn't happy with that and clipped a stitch plate onto my swami. Problem was it wasn't a properly tied swami, just my chalk bag sling. So when no one was looking I put him back on hip belay.

Here's where it gets good. Brian (sp?) gets to the anchor and wants me to lower him. Me being a noob, I sucked it up and lowered him from my hip belay. I still have the rope burn scars. Good times.

Bryan Becker (aka the Hobbit for his oversize heart and modest displacement) is a prince of a man and one hell of a good climber. He and Ed Webster were some of the first to come and hangout in Tucson back when we tried to keep the scene there low key. The C Springers just kept on coming and never really quit visiting during the winter months. Great bunch of strong climbers...we had lots of fun and friendship with them.

Thanks Steve. Anyone else have stories of him to tell?

edit: strangely enough I never met Ed. But I did climb a bit with Leonard Coyne (sp?)

Cool. It was long ago but I remember him as being very competent. Only met him the one time. He had a group with him but was very unassuming; just asked to tie in.

I was going to school, and part of the climbing community, in Gunnison when those guys were working the Black. I saw him around a bunch but the only interaction I had with him was similar to the story above. There is a huge roof in Taylor Canyon at the 1st Buttress. Bryan was working on that beast (which finally went at 5.12(?), and needed a belay slave. I volunteered, as I had quite a bit of experience belaying John Rosholt on that very roof. He worked for over an hour, hanging from the guano/polished roof for long periods, looking like an insect or something. Then, he would fly off, swinging wildly, first consternation, then a big smile. I'd lower him down and he'd be off at it again. Lots of energy in that guy!

BB IS ALIVE AND WELL, AND STILL LIVING IN THE Pikes Peak Region. Saw him just the other evening at a function at Colorado College. Here is a recent photo. Bryan is the short guy on the right. I haven’t a clue who those other f*#kers are.

damn, both those other guys look familiar. If Alan Hill (RIP) was still around, he'd know. That was his crew.

Lots of familiar faces there. I tied in with with Brian, Peter, and Ed at least once.
Garden of the Gods was my home rock from 1977 through 1980. Good to see those guys got old just like I did.

Thanks for the posts. I climbed a bit with Peter Gallagher at the Gods. He was way better than I, a real nice guy and didn't mind climbing at my grade. Just enjoying the rock.
