All,

Will spend a bit of time near Big Sky in July. Several tweens in tow. Any good cragging (mid-week) that is amenable to setting up some easy top ropes for the monkeys? Easy access, low grades, etc. Thanks if you're able to suggest something that would make for a fun day of exploring.

Regards,
Dave.

I once climbed here: https://www.mountainproject.com/area/107769994/main-cliff

I don't remember too much about it, routes were reasonably decent, I think. Close to the river for afterwards!

That's funny, I was going to ask too. We're going to be there in June. Gallatin Canyon, check! How about any bouldering in the area?

'Bout 15 miles north towards Bozeman...

Gob of climbing and bouldering. Adequately described on the 'proj.

The climbing gym in Bozeman has good beta. A local willing to show you around would be helpful.

Catch the Dirtfarmers if they're playing. Rumor has the banjo player has done some climbing...

That red cliff area would be good for top roping-5 min approach, decent camping right there... fun climbs. Gallatin is a bit more involved with kids and all.

The better known stuff around Gallatin Tower is definitely better climbing, but for setting up easy TRs for kids, there's no good concentration of easy routes that I can recall. You're also more likely to have someone drop something on you down there. My daughter was pretty much turned off of climbing for life when a nut dropped off the Regular Route on Gallatin Tower hit the top of her helmet. It's a good thing she was wearing one!

If you ever go back sans kids hike up into Beehive Basin. Cool Montana alpine with awesome routes right there by Big Sky. The approach is about as easy as it gets for alpine...

Unless you have a guidebook specific to Gallatin Canyon I would think it would be included, it's a fairly popular area. It's in the book I have (rock climbs of southwest Montana volume 4 by Kyle Vassilopoulos), as well as the Red Cliff area mentioned by David Knopp upthread. Basically you drive up Big Sky Road for 9 or 10 miles to the resort area and continue up the road for 1 1/2 miles or so. Take a right on Beehive Badin road where it's 2 miles or so to the trailhead parking. From there it's about 2 hours of casual walking uphill into the basin. You'll find trad multipitch in the 5.6 to 5.11 range.

From the book: "near the center of the basin is a classy little cliff with several aspects just above a lovely tarn. Locals often come here with friends and family for easy leads and setting topropes. There are other first rate crags to the north as well as some fun bouldering throughout the basin. You can't find a more picturesque setting".

That little cliff mentioned above is right by Beehive Pond. The multipitch stuff is beyond that. Hope this helps. It's a super fun area.

Red Cliffs is your closest spot for 5.7-.10 sport. Short and sweet they are perfect for young children. Around the corner are some new (read: unpublished) harder routes from 5.11-.13.A trip down to Gallatin Canyon particulary the East Side is highly recommended if you are looking for a day of trad climbing ~300 routes from 5.6-.13.

Depending on the snow levels and how far the young ones want to hike, Wolverine Basin holds amazing alpine sport climbing about an hour from the trail head inthe Bridgers.

Gallatin Canyon has tons of bouldering...the best collections are up Cascade Creek and at Hidden Lakes.

Mountain Project has a lot of info for most of those areas...however The Dockins-Kalakay guide is best for a comprehensive look at the trad climbing, Kyle’s book is best for the sport climbing and The Christensen book is the newest guide and focuses on the bouldering scene.
