Hi all--
I'm planning on doing a route on Temple Crag, and then the Thunderbolt-Sill Traverse up in the Palisades starting on May 14.
How's the snowpack? After a lean early winter and a fat March, is the Sierra a bit less than average for this time of year?
I ran across the following article that says that the Southern Sierra is at about 31% of normal, and just wanted to check with the well-informed denizens of Supertopo to see if that seems about right.
Thanks,
Neil

The Calif. DWR runoff forecast for the Owens watershed is 73% of normal, so your guess about the snow pack is about right. In Bishop Creek this weekend, it was mostly snow covered above 10,000 ft. and I'd expect Big Pine Creek to be similar. The mountains are getting a little precip right now, but we're supposed to be back into spring temps by the end of the week, so you can expect some more snow to burn off by the time you go in.
I'd bring an axe and crampons for the Thunderbolt-Sill traverse. For Temple routes, a good way to avoid carrying axe and crampons on the climb is to kick nice big steps the afternoon before the climb when the snow is soft.

Great idea about pre-stomping steps the day before the climb. Never thought about that. Sun Ribbon Arete is a classic. Get on it.

Has anyone been up in the palisades recently? What are approach and route conditions like? We're looking at swiss arete.
