I'm from Colorado and got here with an 08' Toyota Tacoma. I go to get my smog check and they tell me that I passed but I didn't because I have an after-market K&N air filter system that is not street legal. WTF If it passed it passed, no?

So I was looking at $1,000 to get a dealer to put it back to stock. I found one from a junkyard in N.C. for $125, got it shipped. I installed it today took about 2 hrs, no issues and went to the smog dude.

He said I failed again because I disconnected the negative terminal on my battery! Which he said clears the computer memory. He didn't charge me but told me to drive it 50 miles and bring it back in. WTF???

Any help would be great. Thanks!

First, terminal is negative. Second, what he told you about driving for a bit to reset is standard practice. Though, not to be confused with practicing in a standard.

You have a 49 state K&N cold intake system ($200) when you need the 50 state unit ($300). The 50 state comes with a california sticker (blatant corruption).
That said, you also picked a retarded test station operator as most mechanics know the K&N cold intake systems actually increase engine efficiency. A good mechanic would allow the 49 state unit. Mine passes everytime.
Try a different test station or install the 50 state version and go back to the idiot tester.
Also, buy a OBD tester from walmart for $20 so you can reset your own codes.

And yet the same truck bought it California gets 13 miles a gallon. Buy it anywhere else and it gets 17-20.

Saving the planet?

I hear you, DMT, but the OP's truck was CLEAN. It's just stupid, stupid, stupid "visual" checks that need to be tossed. What's under the hood makes ZERO difference. The only thing that matters is what comes out the pipe. Had a friend who was an ace VW mechanic. On one rig he modified to have two carbs--more power, cleaner burning, etc. DMV forced him back to stock setup--and dirtier burning!--in order to pass. I think once he got home he just reinstalled his custom rig.

And let’s knott fergit the inimitable wisdom of our Sacrotards in making the oil refineries change their brew twice a year! That makes so much sense.

Yeah, not all laws are completely sensible. Science sometimes influences regulations, but so does money. Still, I haven't heard of many stage III smog alerts in a few decades. I'll stop playing and go sit under a tree with my tinfoil hat anyway.

I remember the bad old days but well intentioned idiots do us no good. There is no reason in hell that new cars need to be smogged until maybe 6 or 7 years. And if the Sacrotards were actually interested in cutting pollution they would do away with at least half the useless stop signs in the state, build roundabouts (which would be huge boon to the body shops), and institute meaningful driver licensing and get half the retards off the roads and onto public transit, provided they could read a bus schedule.

It's ironic, some call it corruption that California has more stringent pollution standards requiring specific hardware in route to finding a mechanic that will game the system to approve non-compliant hardware.

K&N Sells a 49 state cold air intake system for $200. They also sell an identical 50 State version for $300 that comes with a California compliant sticker because California levy's a tax on them for a performance part that actually decreases the pollutants emitted from a combustion engine but, is not a factory item.
Where does this money go? You tell me.

The government taking money from you and lying about the reason is corruption. You can call it whatever you want.
There is no where I can find that states where these additional fees are being spent. For a king you're missing a lot of the details tut.

It goes to pay for roads and bridges

You need to get out more, braj. We gots the highest taxes and the crappiest roads,
but that’s fitting for the crappy drivers we have.

I don't drive on metaphors, but I sure drive on some crap roads amongst some
crap drivers. Good thing we don't have frost and such here. And where in
the constitution does it say that each and every illiterate moron is entitled
to a drivers license? I got really spoiled up in Vangroovy and Seattle last
week driving with people who are not 24/7 homicidally inclined. Within 10
minutes of leaving the SeaTac car rental facility I'm goin'

"Are these people on ludes or are they just out to prove how nice they can be?"

hey there, say... skywalker1...

welcome to calif-- yep home of the gophers... (well, perhaps some golfers,
too, over near monterrey... ;) but... yep, gophers) ...

i grew up there, since the early 60's ...
first critter, perhaps that i ever saw in the park... hee hee...

(aside from our a cat, or, dogs... and birds) ...
(my daddy moved us there, from back east)

not sure, but i think?? it was in the late 60's to early 70's
that i remember us all getting the 'smog' whatevers for the cars...
so, i sure can't help-- i am 'out dated' and out of state'd...

here, this is a nice house-warming link for you,
(gophers)
you missed the wonderful old day, in calif, but,
i hope you will still enjoy it...

Thanks nee bee! How the hell do you have lips behind your front teeth??? I am enjoying it here so far but I'm the spouse in tow. So we will see...

Looking at the posts from others (thanks!) I just scratch my head at the rule. I only drive the thing when I have our daughter, 2-3 miles tops. Otherwise I ride my motorcycle which is way more convenient for anything here in So Cal. In Colorado the truck made sense with snow, skiing, rafting/ kayaking and all....

Cheers!

That's because we (the voters) sh#t the bed on property taxes while also allowing/encouraging sprawl to continue. It's unsustainable infrastructure development, plaing and simple.

Then, the one real revenue stream we had for fixing roads and public transit -- the fuel tax -- got hamstrung when we started regulating fleet fuel efficiency.

A tangled web we weave.

The State legislature is dumb, but your average California voter is a special breed...
