"Caltrans has started clearing avalanche debris from the east side of the Tioga Road in several locations below 9000 feet. Presumably, they will be making their way towards Tioga Pass during the next several weeks. Visitors approaching Tuolumne Meadows from Lee Vining should anticipate bare pavement up to around the Warren Fork and creeping higher as the snow removal efforts continue. Please stay clear of all machinery while on this stretch of road."

I'm surprised to see them already beginning the preliminary stages of clearing the road. Especially with the wet spring the Sierra has been having thus far.

63" of snow and dropping fast at the Pass right now: http://cdec.water.ca.gov/jspplot/jspPlotServlet.jsp?sensor_no=10107&end=04%2F05%2F2018+18%3A20&geom=huge&interval=14&cookies=cdec01. But we'll see what these next couple incoming systems bring.

Anyone know if the gate 5 miles west of Lee Vining is open to the park entrance at the pass?

I did read it was open last week but I’m not sure how much snow they got during Monday’s storm event and if that got plowed?

Info much appreciated, please I know the road is closed this is a question about ski road access pass the gate low down in the canyon.

I just read the newest Tuolumne winter conditions (last one of the season) report they plowed to the pass.

Thanks Grippa, I'll take your word for it....I can't find that statement on their update, likely my technology retardation. Heading there tomorrow with hopes of the corn factory being in full production up high.

Cheers,

"Caltrans continued there (sic) snow removal efforts on the east side of Tioga Pass this week and they reached Tioga Pass before this last storm. Visitors approaching from the east should anticipate dry pavement (except any new snow that falls) east of Tioga Pass. The park will be working on the road from west to east now."

Sounds like they're queuing up the big snow removal equipment at snowline before moving into the gut of Tuolumne.

FYI - Heard from a reliable local source this afternoon that the gate is closed low in the canyon. No public access beyond it for now.

Is there anything to prevent a person just going up Tioga Pass and going as far as he wants to on a bike? Or biking up from Crane Flat?

Plows are just east of Tenaya Lake, working through three to four feet of snow.

I'll predict they open the road on May 18th.

Could this possibly be Plan 2 for me? Much rather go this way than 99 to Bridwell's.

Tioga Road corridor is outside designated wilderness so no reason a permit would be required.

When the pass is closed, it is enforced and presumably posted as wilderness.
I have a friend that "walked" his bike over the pass in winter 2015 and was intercepted and tooled near the gate above crane flat. $125!

Looks like around 49" of snow at the Tioga Pass Entrance Station (is that the park entrance on the Eastside???)

Last may the snow melted 60'. . .

Re spring cycling on the Tioga Rd, the Superintendent's Compendium of regulations for Yosemite, 36 CFR §4.30 (a), reads:

Spring bicycle use on the Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road may be permitted on days and during times in which no snow removal activities are underway, when the road is cleared of snow but not yet opened to vehicle traffic, and subject to any limits or restrictions set by the superintendent.

Another section specifies that the Tioga Road east of Crane Flat is closed in winter. Violating the closure would be the basis for a ticket and fine, not lack of a wilderness permit. Wilderness permits are only required for overnight camping.
